How to Apply for a Wastewater Permit

Please follow the steps below to learn about the wastewater application requirements. Additionally, you can check Permit Portal Guide & Tutorials page for tips and How-To Guides.

1

Prepare Site Plan

When preparing site plans, it is important to follow the regulations outlined in Section II.F of Regulations Governing Wastewater Treatment and Dispersal Systems in Wake County. These plans, submitted along with applications, need to be accurately scaled. The site plan must clearly indicate all structures present on the property. The site plan should include, but not limited to the following details:

  • The entire property, including dimensions
  • The property's address
  • Bar scale
  • Structural dimensions of all existing and proposed structures
  • The precise location of proposals in relation to at least three property lines measured perpendicular to those lines
  • Existing structures, driveways, easements and buffers.

2

Stake and Flag the Property Corners

Please follow these instructions when preparing the site:

  • Locate and clearly flag all corners (pins) or proposed corners of the lot that will be evaluated. It is essential to clearly identify and flag all property lines at intervals of at least 50 feet. If you are unsure about the exact location of the property corners, it is advisable to hire a professional land surveyor to survey and flag the property before the site visit by a staff member from the Environmental Services Department.
  • Locate and clearly flag all corners of the proposed structure(s) footprint or building envelope as shown on the submitted site plan. This flagging or marking should include the entire foundation of the structure as well as any decks, patios, porches and similar features.
  • Locate and clearly flag all buffer yards, Neuse riparian buffers, water supply watershed buffers, easements, drainage way buffers, special impoundments and stormwater management devices on the lot that will be evaluated.

Please note:

If Wake County staff needs to dig any auger borings/probing, we do not want to hit your underground utility lines.  It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all underground utility lines (both public and private) are marked.  We strongly recommend that you call 811 to have your publicly managed underground utility lines marked.  There is no charge for 811 service, but you should contact 811 at least three working days before Wake County staff are scheduled to be on your property.  Please note that 811 does not mark private underground utility lines (including, but not limited to, secondary water/sewer/gas/electric lines, or water/sewer lines between the right of way or meter to the residence).  Here is a link to 811, describing private lines. You will need to pay a private line locator to locate lines on private property.  If damage occurs to public or private underground utility lines due to those lines not being marked, Wake County is not  responsible for repairs or replacement.

Complete All Site Plan Requirements

When submitting your application for an Improvement Permit and/or Construction Authorization, it is crucial that all items are completed. Failure to do so WILL DELAY the processing of your application and may result in a fee for an unnecessary trip.

To ensure compliance, please remove heavy vegetation, small trees (under three inches in diameter), tall grasses, kudzu and any shrubbery that obstructs visibility or hinders movement. While clearing the area, proper care should be taken to protect the lot and NO SOIL SHOULD BE REMOVED.
