On Thursday afternoon, July 27, 2023, Wake County Animal Control responded to a call on Stephenson Road for an injured tan Pit Bull. Upon examination at the Wake County Animal Center, veterinary staff determined that the four-year-old dog, Choppa, had been severely burned over roughly 60% of his body. Due to the severity of the injuries, Choppa was immediately transported to the Animal Emergency Hospital and Urgent Care in Raleigh for pain management and treatment.

The following morning, Friday, July 28, 2023, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Wake County Animal Control to further investigate this possible animal cruelty case.  The following is the timeline for the case:

  • Wednesday Evening, July 26, 2023:  Family last reported seeing Choppa in their yard in the 5700 block of Goolsby Court near Apex

  • Thursday, July 27, 2023:
    • Morning: Family first noted that Choppa was missing from the yard
    • Late Afternoon: Wake County Animal Control receives a call about an injured dog on Stephenson Road near Apex
    • Evening:  Transferred to Emergency Clinic for Care

  • Friday, July 28, 2023:
    • Morning: Investigation initiated by Wake County Sheriff’s Office and Wake County Animal Control
    • Late Evening: Unfortunately, even with extensive treatment, Choppa’s condition worsened, and it was decided to humanely euthanize him

“If you know something, no matter how small it may seem, that will help catch the person(s) who might be responsible for this heartbreaking and most heinous crime, do not hesitate to call our office,” Wake County Sheriff Willie Rowe said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Wake County Investigator Thompson at 919-856-6800.

“We are grateful that members of our community made us aware of Choppa’s condition and allowed us to care for him in a timely manner to prevent additional suffering,” said Animal Services Director Dr. Jennifer Federico. “We want to ensure that what happened to Choppa never happens to another pet.  Remember, if you are concerned about any animal, please call your local Animal Control or 911.”
