Mattress Disposal Program

Mattresses will move up this conveyor belt and be shredded into small pieces.

Wake County has just launched a new shredder program for mattresses and box springs! Commercial haulers are now asked to separate mattresses/box springs from other types of waste and bring them to the South Wake Landfill, where they will be shredded before being buried in the landfill. A fee of $10 per mattress or box spring will be charged to cover operating costs.

Whole mattresses are bulky and difficult to compact even with the powerful equipment used at the landfill. By shredding the mattresses first, their volume is reduced so that they take up less space. In the future, we may be able to sort the shredded pieces and separate valuable parts out for recycling.

LOCATION: 6300 Old Smithfield Road, Apex, NC 27539
HOURS: Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Frequently Asked Questions about Mattress Disposal

How will the new fee work and why is it necessary?

The introduction of a new fee per mattress and per box spring is necessary to cover the costs associated with implementing and maintaining the shredder disposal program. This fee helps fund the purchase and maintenance of shredding equipment and the operational expenses involved in the shredding process. By transitioning from a tonnage-based payment system to a per-mattress/box spring fee, we can ensure a fair and sustainable funding model for the program.

Are there any alternatives to shredding?

While other disposal methods exist, shredding mattresses and box springs have proven to be highly effective and beneficial. Alternative methods, such as incineration or chemical decomposition, may have their own drawbacks in terms of environmental impact or feasibility. Shredding strikes a balance between efficient waste management and environmental responsibility, making it the preferred choice.

Can shredded mattresses or box springs be recycled or reused in any way?

Yes, shredded mattress and box spring materials have the potential for recycling or repurposing. Some components, like metal springs and wood frames, can be separated and recycled as valuable resources. Additionally, shredded materials can find application in various industries, such as carpet padding, insulation and composite materials. Exploring these avenues contributes to a more sustainable approach to waste management. At this time, the shredder purchased will solely be used to shred as the reclamation of materials will be an expansion project in the future.

Why is there a need for a new shredder disposal program?

Shredding a mattress and box spring significantly reduces its volume by breaking it down into smaller pieces. This allows us to maximize the use of available landfill airspace. By compressing shredded mattresses and box springs, we can create more room for additional waste disposal, ultimately extending the lifespan of the landfill.
