Age and Identification Requirements

Requirements for Obtaining a Marriage License in Wake County

Application Requirements:

  • Review the Marriage Application Checklist

  • Both applicants must be in the same location for the Video call to complete the Marriage Licenses application process.

  • Provide their valid Government-issued Photo ID with full name and date of birth (e.g., driver's license or passport) AND Provide proof of Social Security Number.

Applicants' Proof of Age and Identification:

Ages 21+

  • Social Security card or proof of number, (Social Security card or W-2 form) and
  • Current ID with name and date of birth - Acceptable identifications:
    • Driver's license, or
    • State-issued ID card, or
    • Passport, or
    • Military ID, or
    • Certified copy* of birth certificate

* A certified copy should be on security paper, including a signature and seal from the issuing agency.

Ages 18-20

  • Social Security card or proof of number, (Social Security card or W-2 form) and
  • Certified copy* of birth certificate

* A certified copy should be on security paper, including a signature and seal from the issuing agency.

Ages 16-17

  • Social Security card or proof of number, (Social Security card or W-2 form) and
  • Certified copy* of birth certificate
  • Consent of parent having full or joint custody acknowledged before the Register of Deeds
  • Current Photo ID of the person giving consent
  • Maximum four-year age difference

Under Age 16

  • Cannot marry in North Carolina
