Effective 3/30/2020 Until Further Notice:  For the health and safety of our staff, customers, and the general public, we have made arrangements to deliver all services to your homes and offices online, by video conference, and by mail. Our office is currently closed to non-staff to protect public health. You do not need to physically come to our office.

The Wake County Register of Deeds will be issuing Marriage Licenses virtually, online by appointment only.

Before you fill out the application

Requirements to be Married in North Carolina

  • ​Applicants do NOT need to be residents of North Carolina to marry in Wake County or North Carolina.
  • A premarital medical examination is NOT required.
  • All of North Carolina's 100 Register of Deeds offices issue marriage licenses that can be used anywhere in the state. The original license must be returned to the county where it was issued.
  • Marriages may be performed by an ordained minister of any religious denomination, a minister authorized by a church, a magistrate, or a federally or state-recognized Indian Nation or tribe.
  • Getting married at a ceremony without a license may cause legal problems for a couple in the future. Without a recorded license, no one can determine whether they are in fact married until a court has determined it.

Failure to follow the instructions below can significantly delay the process!

Marriage License Application Checklist - Virtual Appointment

Please follow the steps below to schedule an online appointment:

  1. Install the Android or iPhone Google Duo App on your Smartphone (you must have a camera and internet access). At the time of your appointment, you will be contacted using Google Duo at the mobile phone number you provided. Both parties must be together in a single video conference with valid identification and proof of social security (or affidavit). The $60.00 fee will be paid by credit/debit card at that time.
  2. Click the ‘APPLY FOR A MARRIAGE LICENSE’ below and complete the online application.
  3. Upon completing the application, send an email to [email protected]
    The email must include the following information:
    • Contact information (email address, phone number, and mailing address)
    • The online application order number*
    • A copy of both parties' valid identification.
    • If either party have never been issued a social security number, submit a completed affidavit
  4. Once we have reviewed your application you will be contacted to schedule an appointment. Please allow at least three to five business days for us to contact you to schedule the appointment.
    • Due to the high demand, Wake County residents will have first priority for appointments. Residents of other counties may find it faster to obtain a license from the register of deeds in your own counties.
  5. After the scheduled appointment, the marriage license will be issued and mailed via U.S. Mail to the address provided.

Wake County Civil Marriages - Information and Location

9:30 AM – 12:00 PM
1:30 PM – 4:00 PM

  • Weddings will be conducted by appointment only in 30-minute intervals. Couples may apply for an appointment by emailing [email protected], but must first obtain a valid marriage license issued by a North Carolina Register of Deeds Office before an appointment will be granted.
  • Wedding parties will be limited to a total of 6 people (couple getting married, two witnesses at least 18 years old, and up to two additional witnesses).
  • The $50.00 marriage fee will be paid in the Clerk of Court’s Cashier Office in room 2500 of the Wake County Justice Center on the same day of appointment prior to the ceremony taking place.
  • All individuals in attendance must wear a face-covering in accordance with Emergency Directive #21 issued by the Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.
