Books on the Go

Wake County Public Libraries offers no contact pickup for library materials through our Books on the Go service. In addition to our collection of books and audiobooks, Book Discussion Titles and Book Club Kits can be reserved. 

How to use the Books on the Go Service?

  1. Place books on reserve using our online catalog. You can request up to 30 items at a time.
  2. Once you have received an email notification that your item(s) have arrived, your books are available for pickup during Books on the Go hours. Once your book has arrived, click the link in your email to schedule an appointment time. You may receive multiple emails about requests being available, but you only need to schedule one appointment. We will put all available requests into your bag.
  3. Staff will check out your requested items and place them on a table in the lobby or at the front of the library. When you arrive, look for the Books on the Go bag with your name on it. These items are already checked out to you.

How do I return materials? When and where can I return library books?

You can return your library materials at participating libraries during the same hours that the Books on the Go service is available. Although our book drops are still closed, we will have book return bins available. You do not need to schedule an appointment to return items.

Yes -- you can return these special library materials at participating libraries during the same hours that the Books on the Go service is available. Although our book drops are still closed, we will have book return bins available.

I returned my book several days ago. Why isn't it showing as checked in?

Returned books will be set aside for a period of time before being checked into ensure they are safe to handle before we check them in and make them available for others to enjoy. WCPL is fine free, and there will be no penalty for not returning books during this window. This is just one part of our reopening plan. This allows our staff the time and space to process books safely. If your items are still showing on your account after about a week, please call the library where you returned them so staff can look for them.

If I have multiple books to pick up, do I need to schedule multiple appointments?

If you have multiple books ready for pickup, you only need to schedule one appointment for these. Staff will put all of your books into a bag with your name on it. If books come in for you after staff have prepared the bag for your appointment, you would need to let them know that there may be additional titles ready.

Can I pick up a InterLibrary Loan through this service?

Right now, these items are not available for pickup through this service, but we are working to expand and offer these! Please continue to check our website or social media for updates and expansions to Books on the Go!

How long will it take my books to be ready for pickup?

We are experiencing longer than usual wait times due to the number of requests that have been placed. We are preparing requests as quickly as we are able to, and will notify you when your books are ready.

What should I do if I miss my appointment?

Please call the library pick up location to reschedule your appointment or cancel requested items. After three days, your books will be checked back in to allow others to borrow them.

Can I donate books?

At this time, we are unable to accept donated materials. We are focused on safely accepting returns of WCPL materials and InterLibrary Loan books.

What are you doing to protect the safety of patrons and library staff?

Books on the Go offers contactless pickup in order to provide maximum social distancing for the safety of our patrons and our staff. Staff will use gloves and face masks, and sanitize surfaces frequently in accordance with guidelines from public health authorities. Additionally, when books are returned, we will enforce a delay before handling library materials or making them available for checkout.

Can I place a book on reserve via telephone?

Yes! Please call a participating library for assistance.

What if I have fees?

Library staff will work with you to check out materials. We are not accepting any payment at this time.

Do I need a library card?

Yes, a Wake County Public Libraries System account is needed to use the Books on the Go service. If you do not have a library account, please register for an account online.

What if I have mobility issues and cannot leave my vehicle?

If you are unable to leave your vehicle to pick up your materials due to mobility issues, we can provide accommodation such as placing items in the trunk of your vehicle. Please call the library for assistance when you arrive.
