The Commission shall consist of 15 Wake County citizens, 7 representing the 7 Commissioners' districts, appointed for a two-year term and the remaining 8 at-large members appointed for one-year terms.

Tammy Martin, Chair
District 4

Tammy Martin is the current Chair of the Commission and appointed to WCCW in 2003.  She also represents Region IV as a member the Board of Directors of the National Association of Commissions for Women

Professionally, she joined the NC Agency for Public Telecommunications (NCAPT) in 1994 as the State Services Network Manager.  Prior to joining APT, she was the Audio Visual Systems Designer with the North Carolina Museum of History and in private industry for ten years working in commercial TV.

Tammy is a graduate of North Carolina State University, with a bachelor's degree in Speech Communications.

Karyn Thomas
District 3

Personal:
Karyn Chalmers Thomas was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. Married to Lester Thomas and currently resides with husband in Morrisville, NC. Together, they coordinate and sponsor a variety of events through their not-for-profit organization, the Ujima Group, Inc. that include the annual Kwanzaa Celebration and A Legacy of Pride for Black History for the Town of Cary.

Matriculated to North Carolina State University and received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Political Science

Professional Background:
I began my broadcasting career in 1976 at WRAL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina as a cooperative education student through North Carolina State University’s Co-operative Education program for Liberal Arts majors. While at WRAL, worked in production, news, public affairs and master control.  In 1983, accepted a job with WPCQ-TV, the NBC affiliate in Charlotte, North Carolina and continued to expand television production and producing skills as a Special Projects Producer for news and public affairs. In 1986 moved to Los Angeles, CA and continued my professional career in cable television as the Public Access Administrator for Continental Cablevision, the third largest cable company in the country.

While in Charlotte, became involved in Public Access programming and produced two programs for the local access station and served as board member, treasurer and President of the Black Media Association and was a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.  

Currently, I am the manager of Raleigh Television Network, the City of Raleigh’s new digital cable franchise television center and network managing a staff of nine people who are responsible for operation and transmission of three channels on Time Warner Cable, Inc.

I have over 30 years of television and cable broadcasting experience and have won numerous awards and recognition for my community service and television production work.

Ernestine Durham, Treasurer
District 7

NC Area Director for the Social Security Administration since August, 2002, Ernestine is active in a variety of organizations, including National Association of Female Executives, Inman Park Community Association, Boys and Girls Club and Raleigh Professional Women’s Forum to name a few. She also enjoys participating in various fundraising events for not-for-profit organizations: Race for the Cure, MS Walk, March of Dimes Walk, etc. as well as efforts to call attention to the plight of others. An avid football and college basketball fan,  she is a reader of all types of books and considers herself a " health & fitness nut” and a new golfer.

 

Cary de la Osa , Secretary

Cary de la Osa grew up in Miami and moved to Raleigh in 2004. Mrs. de la Osa is married to Octavio and is the mother of three Jennifer, Alessandra and Octavio Jr.

Jacqueline Brown

Jacqueline Brown is the Director of Communications for Wake Education Partnership.  She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she received a bachelor's degree in political science with a minor in public relations. She is currently pursing her Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in management from Campbell University. 

In addition, she serves as Local Director of Christian Education for Green Grove AME Zion Church, serves on the Board of Directors for the Kidney Coaching Foundation and is a member of Association for Fundraising Professionals and Triangle Business and Professional Women.  In her spare time, she enjoys singing, playing the piano, photography and sports.  

Meenal Khajuria

Meenal Khajuria is the Assistant Director of the North Carolina Metropolitan Coalition, a group of Mayors committed on issues facing our state’s urban areas.

A recent transplant to Raleigh, Meenal enjoys reading (especially Harry Potter), baking and spending time with her family and friends.

She has a B.A. from Salem College; a Master’s in Political Management from the George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management and will pursue a Master of Social Work in the Fall

Tracy D. Wright

Tracy D. Wright is the Partner Project Coordinator with the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NCCASA) for the National Resource Sharing Project. Her current work provides technical assistance and training to 18 state sexual assault coalitions. In this capacity, Tracy also works with national entities to create a coordinated response to ending sexual violence and addresses emerging issues. Tracy’s initial work in the women’s anti-violence movement began as a project intern with NCCASA where she compiled an analysis of over 75 sexual assault service providers in North Carolina. Fully committed to a life of service, Tracy serves on the board of the Wake County Commission for Women and regularly lends time and talents to Planned Parenthood Health Systems, North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence Women of Color Caucus and Reaching Your Goals, Inc. Ms. Wright holds a BA in Mass Communications from Shaw University and a Masters of Science in Print Journalism from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.

Regelyn Wilder Edwards

Associate Director of Community Services at Building Together Ministries with an emphasis on women's outreach, race relations and Christian community development.  Currently serving on the board of Hearts & Hands for Haiti and takes missions trips to rural communities in Haiti.   Works with JobStart, a preparatory re entry program for incarcerated women, the Community Success Initiative and Jobs for Life programs.   In 2002, recognized by WRAL as one of five Raleigh citizens "Living the Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr."

Katina Smith

Employment Consultant for North Carolina Employment Security Commission.  Over 10 years of experience in the human services field in both the public and private sector.  Previous volunteer work includes serving as a mentor to teenage mothers, serving as a volunteer for after school programs, and have previous active involvement
 in a variety of organizations.  I enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading, shopping, and helping others.  I am a graduate of UNC-Greensboro and hold a BA in Psychology with future plans to pursue a master’s degree in Psychology.

Jamila Forman

Currently working on her M.Ed in Communication Disorders, Jamila is a future Speech-Language Pathologist. While in graduate school she has been the Vice President of the North Carolina Central University chapter of the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association, participant in the American Speech and Hearing Association Minority Student Leadership Program, and presented at several national and international conferences in her field. Recently, she has been elected by her peers to sit on the board of the National Black Association of Speech Language and Hearing as the student representative. Prior to returning to school, Jamila served the state of North Carolina through working at Disability Determination Services and as a research associate at Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute. As a research associate she participated in a longitudinal research project comparing speech and language skills of boys with Fragile X and Down syndromes. In addition, Jamila has been president of a book club for African-American women for the past 5 years.

Jamila enjoys participating in community service. As a leader and as a student she has organized and/or participated in several activities over the years from fund-raising, book drives, clothing donations for women in transition, a christmas party for children who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina, feeding women in transition at the Helen Wright center, Special Olympics, and sending a care package to an American woman soldier who was in Iraq.

In the very near future, Jamila plans to enter the field of speech-language pathology and hopes to use her position to advocate and educate for multicultural issues in communication disorders in both adults and children. Her ultimate goal is to own her own private practice and to start a non-profit organization to mentor young black women and encourage them to enter the field of speech language pathology.
