Information Technology

Overview

Under the Management Services Division, the Information Technology Unit serves the computing and technical needs of the Wake County Sheriff’s Office. We provide Criminal Justice automation support to all Wake County Law Enforcement agencies as well as other state and federal agencies that are connected to the CCJAS (Civil, Criminal Justice Automation System).  Our aim is to provide support and advice on all aspects of Information Technology. 24x7 Technical Support is maintained for all agencies accessing the CCJAS by four IT technicians, one IT specialist, one IT engineer and one IT manager.

Core Services

We provide the central hub for the CCJAS, which is available to local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.  A Records Management System (RMS) is supported through our office to maintain crucial departmental records that aid in the investigative function as well as the overall function of the Sheriff’s Office. Our mobile data network, which is shared by county law enforcement, EMS and Fire agencies, provides field units with instantaneous 911 dispatch, criminal and mapping data.

Software and Hardware Support

We provide support for the installation of hardware, computer networking facilities and individual software packages. We offer support for database applications, reference management packages, office suites, electronic mail applications, web browsers and internally developed applications.

Training and Documentation

The Unit provides core instruction to its deputies, officers and civilian staff on new software applications and hardware advances.  New recruits are trained in the use of the Mobile Client application, which they can use within their patrol vehicles to access warrant information, DMV information, and any other data they need to perform their duties within the confines of their police unit.

Other Important Services

The Unit administers IBM iSeries, Linux and Windows file servers, which provide all background services. The unit also provides purchasing advice, desktop, laptop and printer support for those who access the WakeNet and CCJAS networks across Wake County.
