Divisions


An introduction to the Divisions of the Sheriff's Office:

Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff provides management and direct support to all divisions and is the second-in-command behind the Sheriff of Wake County. He acts as advisor to the Sheriff and discusses issues involving the functions of the office.

Public Information Director

The Public Information Director coordinates all information that is distributed to the news media, organizes news conferences, special forums and events, and serves as the ombudsman for the Wake County Sheriff’s office.

Legal Counsel

The legal counsel for the Wake County Sheriff’s Office advises the Wake County Sheriff and his staff regarding all legal issues involving law enforcement and detention. This unit represents the Sheriff in legal proceedings, preparing cases, consulting with employees, reviewing written documentation, and appearing in court.

Chief of Operations

The Chief of Operations monitors field operations, including patrol, communications, criminal investigations and special operations, and examines operational procedures. The Chief ecommends improvements and efficiencies.

Criminal Investigations

The Criminal Investigation Division provides specially trained and experienced detectives for followup investigation of all crimes reported to the Wake County Sheriff's Office.

Judicial Services

Responsible for the service of all civil process directed to the Sheriff of Wake County by the North Carolina General Court of Justice. This service, mandated by state law, is provided by the Sheriff's Office to all citizens of Wake County.
 
Administration

The Administration Division provides support services for all divisions within the Sheriff’s Office. These services include financial, computers, records, recruiting, training, preservation of evidence, and human resources. They also serve our citizens by providing reports, pistol permits and concealed carry permits.

Patrol

The Patrol Division provides the front line of law enforcement service and protection to the unincorporated area of Wake County. Patrol also assists local municipal departments as well as state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Detention

The Sheriff has the lawfully mandated responsibility for keeping custody and control of what the law refers to as "The Common Jail of Wake County." The jail consists of three state of the art detention facilities:
             

  •  480-bed maximum security Detention Center at the Public Safety Center, downtown Raleigh;
  •  416-bed minimum and medium security Hammond Road Detention Annex A;
  •  416-bed minimum and medium security Hammond Road Detention Annex B.


Internal Affairs

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to serving the community in an efficient, effective, and professional manner. The Internal Affairs and Special Investigations Section helps maintain public confidence and trust in the Sheriff’s Office.

Management Services

The management services division is responsible for maintaining the financial integrity of the Sheriff's Office, providing accounting, financial management, procurement of goods and services, contract management, grant management, and warehousing of equipment in accordance with NC General Statutes. This division develops and updates the business plan for the Sheriff, and manages the human resources function for the Office.
