Standard and Premium Health Plans

Retirees and/or covered spouses who are under age 65 and child(ren) up to age 26 are offered two health plan options: the Standard Plan and the Premium Plan.

Mid-Year Changes

You may make changes to your benefit elections only during certain times:

  • When you initially retire;
  • During annual open enrollment; or
  • Within 30 days of experiencing a qualifying life event. Common qualifying life events include divorce or gaining other coverage.

Important notes:

  • Family members cannot be added to your retiree health plan, but they can be dropped mid-year with a qualifying life event.
  • If you drop coverage for yourself or a dependent, you will not be able to re-enroll yourself or your dependent on the retiree health plan later.

To request a mid-year change, you must submit the Retiree Benefit Election Form and documentation of the qualifying event to Human Resources within 30 days of your qualifying life event date.

Medicare Advantage Plan

Retirees and/or covered spouses who turn age 65 and become age-eligible for Medicare are offered a Medicare Advantage plan. You must elect to enroll in the Medicare Advantage plan.

Enroll in the Medicare Advantage Plan

The following steps are required to complete your enrollment on the Medicare Advantage plan.

  1. Enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B as soon as you become eligible to enroll, which is three months before your 65th birthday. To enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B, contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 or enroll online at https://www.ssa.gov/medicare/sign-up.

  1. Complete and return the Medicare Advantage Enrollment Form to:
    1. Elect Wake County’s Medicare Advantage plan;
    2. Provide us your Medicare Part B number; and
    3. Confirm we have your current physical residential address on file

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you do not enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B when you are first eligible and/or do not provide us your Medicare Part B number or physical residential address, you will not be able to enroll in our Medicare Advantage plan and will forfeit your Wake County retiree health insurance coverage now and in the future.

Declining the Medicare Advantage Plan

If you would like to decline enrollment on our Medicare Advantage plan, complete and return the Medicare Advantage Enrollment Form to let us know. Declining our Medicare Advantage plan means you will forfeit your Wake County retiree health insurance coverage now and in the future.
