The vision of the Wake County Solid Waste Management Division is to have a comprehensive, countywide solid waste management system that is flexible, sustainable, coordinated and built on a foundation of sound environmental principles. Wake County Solid Waste is achieving this vision by collaborating with every municipality within the County to develop and implement a single, comprehensive solid waste management plan that addresses all aspects of the countywide system.
In addition to working with municipalities, Wake County Solid Waste provides an array of solid waste services including Long Term Disposal planning, disposal and recycling facilities and operations, Feed the Bin public school recycling program, environmental education, litter and illegal dumping enforcement. These programs and services play a critical role in ensuring that the Wake County Board of Commissioners’ Environmental Stewardship Agenda is achieved.
The Environmental Stewardship Agenda is based on a desire to develop a culture that recognizes the community benefit of sound environmental protection through knowledgeable citizens. One part of that culture is to shift away from considering waste as a useless material and toward regarding it as a potentially valuable secondary material that is first minimized, then reused and recycled. Wake County is a key leader of this change by virtue of its role in managing environmental programs and services that touch the lives of Wake County citizens on a daily basis.
- In fiscal year 2005 Wake County municipalities generated 350,642 tons of household waste, 28% of which was recycled.
- The Solid Waste Management Division manages 15 recycling and/or disposal facilities throughout Wake County.
- The Solid Waste Management Division is a public enterprise and does not operate on tax dollars – all programs are supported by landfill tipping fees, household fees and revenue generated from recyclables.
- The Solid Waste Management Division, in partnership with the Wake County Public School System, is implementing Feed the Bin, the school paper recycling program.
