Convenience Centers
Convenience Centers are trash and recycling drop-off stations open to all Wake County residential customers. Wake County does not charge residents to use these facilities. To learn more, select one of the following topics:

All open-body vehicles transporting waste must be secured to prevent blown and spilled debris.

No person may loiter or rummage about the facility or remove articles from any containers. Violators will be prosecuted.

Children & pets must remain in vehicles at all times.

Recyclables – No need to sort your recyclables! All Convenience Centers are now COMMINGLED RECYCLING SITES, which means you can place aluminum & steel cans, glass bottles & jars, mixed paper, telephone books and plastic bottles in a single container. The recyclables are taken to a Material Recovery Facility, where they are sorted mechanically!

Bricks, Concrete & Stone

Commercial, industrial, and institutional solid waste – accepted at either the Sanitary Landfill or Transfer Station. Disposal cost is based on the landfill
tipping fee.

Burning or smoldering material – when material is not smoldering, can be disposed at either the Landfill or Transfer Station.

White goods – such as washers / dryers, stoves, refrigerators, water heaters, and air conditioners – accepted at no charge for recycling at either the
South or North Wake Multi-Material Drop-Off Facility.

Lead-acid batteries – accepted at no charge for recycling at either the
South or North Wake Multi-Material Drop-Off Facility.

Scrap tires – accepted at either the
South or North Wake Multi-Material Drop-Off Facility. For five tires or less, there is no charge for passenger vehicle or truck tires. For more than five tires, there is no fee as long as you have a North Carolina Scrap Tire Identification Number and Certification Form. If you do not have such a form, there is a fee of $50/ton.

Yard waste – accepted at several private yard waste facilities. Contact the Solid Waste Management Division at 919-856-6186 for a listing of these facilities.

Stumps/logs – accepted at several private yard waste facilities. Contact the Solid Waste Management Division at 919-856-6186 for a listing of these facilities.

Household hazardous waste – such as pesticides/herbicides, chemicals and poisons – accepted at both
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facilities. Companies capable of properly disposing of commercially generated hazardous waste can be found in the BellSouth Yellow Pages under "Hazardous Materials and Waste Contractors" or at the
technical assistance page.

Infectious waste/untreated, regulated medical waste – cannot, by law, be disposed in Sanitary Landfills. Companies capable of properly disposing of this waste can be found in the BellSouth Yellow Pages under "Waste Removal – Medical". Needles and syringes are accepted for disposal as long as they are placed in sealed, puncture-proof containers.

Radioactive waste – cannot, by law, be disposed in Sanitary Landfills. Consult the product's manufacturer for proper disposal suggestions or contact the North Carolina Division of Radiation Protection at 919-571-4141. Smoke detectors, which have a small amount of radioactive material, should be returned to the manufacturer for proper disposal. (Check inside the detector for company name and address.)

Liquid waste – not accepted at any solid waste disposal facility. If it is hazardous in nature and comes from a Wake County household, it can be disposed of at both
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facilities. Companies capable of properly disposing of commercially generated hazardous waste can be found in the BellSouth Yellow Pages under "Hazardous Materials and Waste Contractors." If the product is not hazardous, please refer to the manufacturer's directions for proper disposal suggestions.

Sewage plant sludge – this is not accepted for disposal. Contact the Permits and Engineering Unit, Water Quality Section, State Division of Environmental Management at 919-733-5083.

Drums – drums that have been punctured so as to contain no free liquid are accepted for disposal at the Convenience Centers, Landfill or Transfer Station. Burn barrels containing debris are not accepted.

Tanks – refer to the manufacturer of fuel or gas tanks for proper disposal suggestions. Propane tanks are not accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility.

Dead animals – accepted only at the North Wake Sanitary Landfill so long as they are not microbiological and/or pathological waste.
