In the event of delayed schedule or cancellation of schools due to weather or other emergency disaster, all tours will be canceled and rescheduled.

No-shows, late cancellations policy: Wake County reserves the right to deny future requests for field trips/tours if groups or individuals do not show up or cancel on the
day-of their visit. Please provide a 3-day notice of cancellation so that we can adjust operations accordingly.

 


Wake County South Wake Landfill Tour 

Recommended for Grade 4 and above

Tour Highlights: View an active working landfill; learn about how landfills are designed and managed; view the "special materials" recycling collection areas; learn about how landfill gas is used to make electricity.

Requirements: Public/Private/Charter School groups MUST provide their own transportation in one vehicle (i.e., bus or large passenger van) that can be driven around the 170+ acre facility. A Solid Waste Staff member will board the vehicle and assist in guiding the driver to various stopping points. Terrain consists of pavement and solid dirt roads along the perimeter of the landfill.

Conditions & Accessibility: THIS IS A REAL, ACTIVE, WORKING LANDFILL. Indoor/outdoor, some loud noise from equipment, odors from trash (mainly riding in a vehicle with possibility of stepping off bus on a portion of closed landfill area for viewing. In the event of heavy rain-saturated ground, group will stay on bus for duration). Restrooms available before or after tour at Field Office Building.

Tours Scheduled: Monday–Friday only, 8 a.m.–2 p.m.

Group Size Limitations: Group minimum is 15. Maximum: One group or bus load at a time. Multiple vehicles are not permitted to follow one another for safety reasons.

Notes for chaperones or attending adults: Required to follow all guidelines as stated on the waiver form. If arriving separately from the bus, you may park in the spaces in front of the Field Office Building and board the bus at that location (if permitted by child's school).

All participants (including adult chaperones and bus driver) will be required to sign a Landfill Tour Waiver Form. A legal parent/guardian will need to sign for his/her student(s) attending the tour.

Sonoco Recycling Center Tour

Paper, plastic bottles and cans collected from Feed the Bin schools are sorted and baled at Sonoco Recycling in east Raleigh. Tours of the Sonoco material recovery facility are currently unavailable because of the COVID-19 pandemic.


 Water Quality Stream Test Field Experience

*For High School Environmental Science & Earth Science Classes Only*

Highlights: This is an "in-the-field" learning experience that can be held in one of two locations:

  1. Field Office Building (inside classroom environment only)
  2. Outside Portico Area of Field Office

Students who are working on science units related to water quality can come to our facility and learn more from the experts in the Water Quality Division.
**For student and onsite worker safety, no access to stream areas within the facilities' property borders will be permitted.

RequirementsStudents should have some water education knowledge and possibly know how to take field samples (e.g., understand basics of good lab test design, how to fill vials, chemical disposal). Testing kits and other materials are provided and can be done with buckets of stream water collected by county staff in advance.

Conditions & Accessibility: Wheelchair-accessible building with restrooms and energy-efficient lighting and refillable water-bottle drinking fountain. Field office building is used by various county employees and work groups which may alter date/time availability. **Please be aware there is no food or vending machines available for breaks/lunches onsite. Visitors are welcome to bring their lunches or have food delivered.


Group Size Limitations
: Minimum: One class group (approx. 20–35) at a time inside the building. Larger groups (35–50) can rotate between indoor and outdoor stations if weather-permitting.

Maximum: Multiple class groups (100+) may be accommodated if held in conjunction with a simultaneous landfill tour on the same day (i.e., half the group would take a tour while the other half does classroom instruction).

 

Scheduling Details: Please have the following information ready at time of scheduling and coordinate your visit at least 4 weeks in advance. This learning experience can be combined with a landfill tour if enough notice is given.

  • Total size of your Group/Class:
    If you're bringing a large (100+) group, you will need to divide groups up between one bus for a landfill tour in conjunction with one group in classroom environment.
