Information on Landfill Tours for the GENERAL PUBLIC

 
The field trips below are for school or education groups only and are scheduled during normal school hours. Tour lengths are flexible to accommodate school needs, but we recommend no longer than one hour for young students. There is no cost for these field trips; however, groups MUST provide their own transportation in one vehicle (bus/van) around the facility. Group size for each field trip is specified below.
Wake County South Wake Landfill Tour (read the flier)
(For grades 4–12)
Length of Tour: Approximately 1 hour

Tours Scheduled: Monday–Friday only, 8 a.m.–3 p.m.

Group Size Limitations: One group or bus load at a time (group minimum = 15)

Tour Highlights: View a closed and active working landfill; learn about landfill design and waste management; view the "special materials" recycling collection areas; see creation of electricity from landfill gas ("waste-to-energy").

 

Sonoco Recycling Center (MRF) (read the flier)
(For grades 1–12; Feed the Bin Program schools only)

Length of Tour: approximately 45 minutes to one hour

Tours Scheduled: Tuesday–Friday only, anytime between 8 a.m.–3 p.m. (no tours between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.)

Group Size Limitations:
Elementary grades – Minimum: 15 students; Maximum for one class: about 32
Middle/High grades- Minimum: 15 students; Maximum: 45

Tour Highlights: Watch collected curbside materials be sorted using various mechanical technologies and prepared for shipping to manufacturers for raw feed stock to make new products. [Note: For safety purposes this is not a walking tour but a live camera feed of the facility's technology and processing.] Younger students will do a hands-on game/activity before the start of the tour.
