Have you ever wondered what happens to your recyclables once you put them in your recycling bin?

They go to a sorting facility or Material Recovery Facility or MRF (pronounced merf). This is the place where all the materials are sorted – both by people and machines. Once sorted, each type material gets baled and is shipped to a manufacturer to be made into new products.

Wake County is now offering free tours to the public to see this process firsthand.

For more information or to register contact Chelsea Arey at Chelsea.arey@wakegov.com or 919-856-6776.

Due to limited parking at Sonoco, Wake County may need to shuttle participants to the facility. If so, participants are to meet in the Wake County Commons parking lot located at 4011 Carya Drive in Raleigh at 10 a.m. on the day of the tour. If your group is not being shuttled over, please meet at 111 S. Rogers Lane in Raleigh. If your group is coming on a single bus, parking can be accommodated. Groups may be as small as 10 people and as large as 25 people.
