<li>Hazardous wastes – &quot;Hazardous waste&quot; means a solid waste or combination of solid wastes that, because of its quantity, concentration or physical, chemical or infectious characteristics, may: <ul><li>Cause or significantly contribute to an increase in mortality or an increase in serious irreversible or incapacitating, reversible illness; or </li>
<li>Pose a substantial present or potential hazard to human health or the environment when improperly treated, stored, transported or disposed of or otherwise managed. </li></ul></li>
<li>Infectious wastes, except as provided by the N.C. Solid Waste Management Rules. &quot;Infectious waste&quot; means a solid waste capable of producing an infectious disease. The types of waste designated as infectious are microbiological waste, pathological waste, blood products and sharps. </li>

<div>Federal and State regulations require that as of January 1, 1998, all sanitary landfills must incorporate a liner and leachate collection system. This adds an additional layer of protection for groundwater when combined with the County's Permanent Household Hazardous Waste Collection facilities; State ban on white goods, used motor oil and lead-acid batteries; vehicle load inspections; and an extensive public education program.<br /> </div>
<div>Wake County residents are not charged for disposal of their solid waste under the following conditions:</div>
<ul><li>They do not use a commercial vehicle. </li>
<li>Vehicle and/or trailer has single axle. </li>
<li>All vehicles must stop on the scales prior to entering landfill. Solid waste transported in open-body vehicles must be secured to prevent spills and/or blown debris. </li>
<li>Commercially hauled municipal solid waste loads containing 10 percent or more recyclable corrugated cardboard or construction and demolition debris will be assessed a surcharge.</li></ul>

<li>Radioactive waste – Cannot, by law, be disposed in Sanitary Landfills. Consult the product's manufacturer for proper disposal suggestions or contact the North Carolina Division of Radiation Protection at 919-571-4141. Smoke detectors, which have a small amount of radioactive material, should be returned to the manufacturer for proper disposal. (Check inside the detector for company name and address.) </li>
<li>Liquid waste – Companies capable of properly disposing of this waste can be found in the online or in the phone book under &quot;Hazardous Materials and Waste Contractors.&quot; If the product is not hazardous, please refer to the manufacturer's directions for proper disposal suggestions. </li>
<li>Used motor oil – Accepted at no charge for recycling at either Multi-Material Drop-Off Facility or at both Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facilities. </li>
<li>Sewage plant sludge – This is not accepted for disposal. Contact the Permits and Engineering Unit, Water Quality Section, State Division of Environmental Management at 919-733-5083. </li>
<li>Drums – Drums that have been punctured so as to contain no free liquid are accepted for disposal at the Convenience Centers, Landfill or Transfer Station. Burn barrels containing debris are not accepted. </li>
<li>Tanks – Refer to the manufacturer of fuel or gas tanks for proper disposal suggestions. Propane tanks are accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility. </li>
<li>Dead animals – Accepted only at the South Wake Landfill so long as they are not microbiological and/or pathological waste. </li></ul>
<div><strong>Please note that: </strong></div>
<ul><li>All open-body vehicles transporting waste must be secured to prevent blown and spilled debris. </li>
<li>No person may loiter or rummage about the facility or remove articles from any containers. Violators will be prosecuted. </li>
<li>Children &amp; pets must remain in vehicles at all times.</li></ul>
