For these types of emergencies, you should add the following supplies to your emergency kit:

  • Water (3 days supply)
  • Portable, battery-operated radio with extra batteries
  • First aid kit

Tornadoes typically develop in early stages of thunderstorms or when the weather becomes unstable.    Tornadoes can occur anywhere and can strike in an instant. Be alert to severe storms in the area and prepared to react if necessary.

Based upon where you live, you may need to make important decisions in advance about how your family will handle this emergency situation.  Develop an emergency plan based upon your family's needs. Establish and maintain an emergency kit.

If a tornado or strong storm is approaching, information and warnings will be broadcast on local TV and radio stations.

Important Terms To Know:

Tornado Watch – Tornadoes are possible. Stay tuned to the radio or television news.

Tornado Warning – A tornado has been sighted. Take shelter immediately!

In the event of a tornado:

  • If you are indoors, move away from windows.

  • If you are outdoors, move into a building.

  • If you are driving, pull off the road and stop away from trees. Stay off overpasses. Watch for flooded streets.

How can I be prepared?

  • Be alert to local weather conditions. Consider getting a weather radio or listen to local stations
  • Have an emergency kit prepared.
  • Make sure that all family members know how to respond after a storm:
    • Teach family members how and when to turn off gas, electricity, and water.
    • Teach children how and when to call 9-1-1, police, or fire department and which radio station to tune to for emergency information.
