Located south of Wendell near the Johnston County line, the 265-acre Turnipseed Nature Preserve is open for hiking and nature exploration. Turnipseed is designated as a Wake Nature Preserve for its ecological and geological significance.

Phase 1 of the preserve opened in 2017 with 3.1 miles of trails exploring various habitats and wildlife, a 140' pedestrian bridge and boardwalks with overlooks across the creek, as well as picnic areas and an open play area.  Phase 2, which opened in Fall 2018, features a second parking entrance with 1.2 miles of trails along a creek with rock outcrops, a wildlife viewing overlook area, and picnic tables.
