The County's population rose to 866,410 as of July 2008, which represents a population increase of 4.4 percent for the period of July 2007 to July 2008. That number translates to the seventh largest numerical growth in the nation (the largest numerical growth in North Carolina), making Wake the 57th largest county nationally. Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, grew by 26,714 people and had the 15th largest numerical growth nationally.
