School Enrollment and Projections
School enrollments for Grades K–12 have increased significantly since the mid-1970s. From 1975 through 2005, WCPSS added more than 66,000 new students, more than double its 1975 enrollment. Enrollment increases were modest until the mid-1980s, but have grown rapidly since that time. On the 20th day of Fall 2011, Wake had an enrollment of 146,687** students in its public school system. Between 2008-2011, Wake County has gained 12,685** students.
Charter Schools
Wake County has also seen growth in Charter School enrollments. By the 2010–11 academic year, Wake County had 13 charter schools with a 20th-day membership of 6,090 students.
Postsecondary Education
Wake County also had a high number of residents enrolled in college or graduate school. According to the 2011 American Community Survey, Wake County had an estimated 81,350 residents enrolled in higher education.
