ORIENTATION AND BASIC ANIMAL HANDLING TRAINING

The first step to becoming a volunteer is to complete an application, which may be downloaded from our website, or you may e-mail rebecca.bierlein@co.wake.nc.us. For those who do not have access to the Internet, an application may be obtained by calling Becky Bierlein at 919-250-3180. Each new volunteer is required to attend an orientation and complete the Basic Animal Handling Training to become eligible to volunteer at the Wake County Animal Center.  The minimum age to volunteer is eighteen (18) years of age.

Orientation provides the volunteer with an overview of the Animal Center, a description of the various volunteer roles, what is expected of our volunteers, and the training requirements for handling animals. The session lasts approximately 1-1/2 hours and is limited to a class size of 20.

Basic Animal Handling Training provides the volunteer with knowledge and training of how to interact with animals in the adoption and restricted areas of the Animal Center, how to assist the public during the adoption process, how to care for the animals, and how to read animal body language to determine their disposition. The training session lasts approximately 1-1/2 hours, is also limited to a class size of 20, and completion of the Orientation session is a prerequisite.

Classes may be held separately, or may be combined into one, 3-hour session, depending on schedule. Please check the website for upcoming training dates.
