Wake County Animal Center Expansion

Wake County opened the expansion of the County’s Animal Center at 820 Beacon Lake Drive, Raleigh on June 30, 2010. The shelter expansion allows Wake County to fulfill its agreement to house animals from the city of Raleigh, town of Garner and town of Cary. There is now consolidated sheltering countywide.

Consolidated sheltering helps Wake County provide high-quality care for cats, dogs and other pets from all municipalities and the unincorporated areas in the County.

The current Wake County Animal Care, Control and Adoption Center opened in 1996 and was designed to include 140 dog kennels and 100 cat kennels for animals from all of Wake County except the city of Raleigh, and the towns of Cary and Garner. The expansion provides the first consolidated animal shelter in Wake County, offering animal care services for all of Wake County.

The expansion is approximately 6,700 square feet and includes the addition of 84 new dog holding units, 75 new cat holding units and building system improvements for the existing dog holding areas. This gives the shelter a total capacity of 218 dog kennels and 175 cat kennels or approximately 17,000 animals per year (an increase of 50%).
