ATTENTION: Wake County Animal Center to begin accepting owner surrender applications Feb. 1

Beginning Feb. 1, the Wake County Animal Center will reopen its doors to pets whose owners can no longer care for them or no longer want them. These owners will have to follow a new, multi-step process, which includes completing an application and, when space is available, making an appointment to bring the pet in.

The Wake County Animal Center strives to create a humane community for the pets and people that live here.
Together, with community partners, we treat and re-home thousands of homeless animals every year.

MISSION STATEMENT: Determined to make a difference for the animals and citizens of Wake County through adoption, education, enforcement and community partnership.

FIVE FREEDOMS – Based on the Brambell Report in 1965, these principles are relevant to the welfare of any animal species. The Wake County Animal Center focuses on meeting these Five Freedoms for animals in our care:
  • Freedom from Hunger and Thirst by ready access to fresh water and diet to maintain health and vigor
  • Freedom from Discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area
  • Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment
  • Freedom to Express Normal Behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind
  • Freedom from Fear and Distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering
