2009 Fall Harvest Celebration Contest Winners:On Saturday, September 19, Historic Yates Mill County Park hosted a Fall Harvest Celebration, with more than 1,100 people in attendance. As part of the event, the park offered a "Bushel Guess" Contest, where event-goers were asked to guess how many kernels of popcorn it would take to fill a bushel basket. A total of 91 people entered the contest and turned in answers ranging from 30 to 5.2 million kernels! The answer to the question was actually 166,824 kernels. The closest answer received came from Keith Brooks, who turned in an answer of 161,325 kernels. Congratulations, Keith, and thanks to everyone who participated in the contest!
Congratulations to our 2009 Yates Mill Cornmeal Cook-Off Contest Winners! Our judges awarded Sharon Morf of Raleigh with First Place with her winning entry, "Lemon-Pecan Cornbread Muffins." Second Place was awarded to Patricia Rhiner of Raleigh with her entry, "Dorothy's Southern Delight." The final winning slot in the adult category was awarded to Betsy Branch of Raleigh with her entry, "Pineapple Cheddar Cornbread," in Third Place. The Youth Category winners were Hanna Proulx in First Place with her entry,"Lemon-Cornmeal Pound Cake," and Jarrod Proulx in Second Place with his entry, "Marmalade Poppy Seed Double-Layer Cake." All winning recipes are available online by clicking on the link below and will be published in the upcoming Yates Mill Cormeal Cookbook! "Mill As Muse": Visual Art Contest 2010The 4th Annual “Mill as Muse” Art Exhibit will feature community artwork inspired by Historic Yates Mill, so get out your sketchbooks, pencils, paintbrushes, etc, and submit an entry into our contest!
The “Mill As Muse” Art Reception will take place on Friday, February 19, 2010, from 6-8 p.m., in the A.E. Finley Center for Education and Research (Park Center) at Historic Yates Mill County Park. Contest winners will be announced during the reception, and a photograph of the winners will also be taken. Get contest rules and entry form.
Photography Contest 2010The 4th Annual “Mill as Muse” Exhibit will feature photography of the park and mill (as well as hand-produced art), so get out your cameras, develop or print out your best shots, and submit an entry into our contest!
