The winner of the 2008 Harvest Celebration Event's "Bushel Guess Contest" was Amy Lowman of Willow Springs. Amy guessed that one bushel of corn (which can make 33 pounds of sweetener) would sweeten 412 cans of soda. Amy's answer came closest to the one we were looking for, which was 400 cans of soda. Sixty-one people entered the contest, and the answers ranged from 3 to 10,000 cans of soda! Congratulations to Amy, and thanks to everyone who participated.

Historic Yates Mill County Park held its third annual Volunteer-In-Parks ("VIP") Appreciation Reception on January 17, 2009, to recognize all of the volunteers who have worked at the park since January 2008. In all, 219 volunteers generously donated 2,600 hours of their services in the following areas: mill interpretation during guided tours, corn-grinding demonstrations, selling cornmeal, cooking products made with Yates Mill cornmeal, conducting historical research, making historically accurate period clothing, storytelling, helping with nature programs, maintaining and constructing trails, teaching craft-making, and participating in the Big Sweep cleanup, among other activities.
Congratulations and thanks go to Gary Coates (235 volunteer hours), Jeanne Robbins (193 volunteer hours), and Tom Wentworth (185 volunteer hours), who were the three top volunteers for 2008.
