Yates Mill Winners Announced

The first-place winner for the 2007 Cornmeal Cookoff Contest was Bonnie Heller for her cornmeal waffles, second-place winner was Betty Packler for her blueberry cornmeal cake, and third-place winner was Jeanne Robbins with her cornmeal pecan sandies. All entries were delicious and creative. View winning entry recipes.

There were 39 people who took a guess at how many kernels of corn would be held in a half-peck basket (i.e., the portion of a bushel basket that would represent the miller's toll). The guesses ranged from 100 to 950,000 kernels. The answer is 9,100 kernels, or 1/8 of a bushel, which can hold approximately 72,000 kernels. The closest guess, of 9,700 kernels, was made by Jan Brunhhorst of Cary.

Volunteer Opportunities

Historic Yates Mill County Park held its second annual Volunteer-In-Parks Appreciation Reception on February 2, 2008, to recognize all of the volunteers who have worked at the park since January 2007. More than 61 volunteers have generously given 1,902 hours of their services in the following areas: mill interpretation during guided tours, corn-grinding demonstrations, selling cornmeal, cooking products made with Yates Mill cornmeal, conducting historical research, making historically accurate period clothing, storytelling, helping with nature programs, maintaining and constructing trails, teaching craft-making, and participating in the Big Sweep cleanup, among other activities.

Congratulations to Linda Rudd, Tom Wentworth and Gary Coates, who were the three top volunteers for 2007. Their combined volunteer hours totaled 563. Linda was named the park’s “Outstanding Volunteer of the Year”! She has helped out at the park in a variety of ways, most notably by researching and creating most of the park’s historic clothing, which is used for costumed interpretation programs, and by serving as the “gatekeeper” at the front door of the mill during corn-grinding days. The recognition is well deserved.
