Spring to Summer Public Programs

Programs offered at Harris Lake require preregistration at least two days prior to program date.

To register, complete and sign the registration form and return it with payment (made out to Wake County Parks) by mail or bring by the park office. Payment and registration form must be received to confirm your spot in a program. Tuesdays are for Tots

Programs for preschoolers ages 2–5

Help your preschooler discover the natural world through stories, hikes, games, crafts and hands-on nature activities. These programs meet at the Cypress Shelter and are $4/child with accompanying adult(s) or all three programs for $10/child.

Terrific Turtles
June 5, 10–11 a.m.
Learn what makes turtles terrific as you meet one of our aquatic turtles and a box turtle. Hike to the pond to search for more then make a terrific turtle craft.



Wild Wednesdays

Have fun as you explore the “wild” side during these Wednesday programs for families. Nature hikes, hands-on activities, or crafts will aid your nature exploration. These programs meet at the Cypress Shelter and are $5/family.turtle duckweed

Terrific Turtles

June 6, 2–3 p.m.
Learn what makes turtles terrific as you meet one of our aquatic turtles and a box turtle. Hike with us to a few of our favorite turtle watching spots then make a craft fit for a turtle.



Family Programs

All family programs are $3/person or $5/family, unless otherwise stated.

Fishing Under the Stars
Saturday, June 2, until 10:30 p.m.
Fishermen take note – we will stay open late tonight to give you the opportunity to fish after dark.

Family Disc Golfing
Saturday, June 2, 2–4 p.m. Meet in the Disc Golf Parking Lot, first gravel lot on the right.
This is a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while learning a fun new sport with the family! Get in on the action by joining a professional disc golfer at Harris Lake’s 18-hole disc golf course to learn proper throwing techniques, rules of the game and much more. Loaner discs will be provided.

Canoeing with Dad
Sunday, June 17, 3–4:30 p.m. $10/canoe Meet in the first gravel lot on the right
For Father’s Day, Dad can take the kids canoeing on our fishing pond. (Mom can come, too!) Class size is limited.

Aquatic Adventures
Thursday, May 24, 2–4 p.m.
Ages 8–12, $8/child
Harris Lake County Park has many types of aquatic habitats. Each one has its own plant and animal life that depends on it. We will visit several areas catching critters and exploring the water’s edge to see who lives there. Dress to get dirty and have fun!  Meet at the Cypress Shelter

Wildlife Habitats at Harris

The following programs can be registered for individually or as a series of 3.

9 a.m.–1 p.m. each day, $15/child/day, or all three days for $40/child (ages 7–10)

These programs will include an educational program, a hike to explore the habitat of the day and a service project related to the topic. Meet at the Cypress Shelter

Mammals of the Water
Monday, June 11
Many mammals depend on water for survival and not just to drink. Explore the lives of these mammals to see how they have adapted to survive in their aquatic homes. Help protect trees from beavers by wrapping them with wire.

Wonder of Birdspair of wood ducks
Wednesday, June 13
Harris is a favorite hangout for birds of all kinds – we have waterfowl, woodpeckers, songbirds and many other cool, colorful and crazy birds. Learn about their lifestyles, how they have adapted to each habitat, and how to identify a few along the way. Help improve bird habitat at the park and check the bluebird and wood duck boxes.

Fantastic Reptiles and Amphibians
Friday, June 15
Explore the vernal pools and other habitats where reptiles and amphibians live. Meet some live animals and learn their secrets to survival. Help us monitor our herp population in the park.

Try-It Discovery Program for Brownie Troops

Play animal BINGO, inspect earthworms, go leaf hunting and much more while you explore nature from different points of view.

In the course of about two hours, your troop will have the opportunity to earn the "Earth and Sky" try-it and parts of the following try-its: Animals, Watching Wildlife, Plants and Outdoor Adventure, 11 requirements in all.

This is a troop-led program in which all activities are independent of each other, giving your troop a choice in activities. Program kits are reserved and loaned out through the park office on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information please contact the office at 919-387-4342.
