Tuesday Teasers

Family programs geared toward ages 5+
Get a little taste of nature and learn with your kids about specific nature topics during these monthly Tuesday programs. These programs are designed to be interactive, and some may include a short hike. All programs are $3/person or $5/family.

Terrific Trees
September 23, 2-3 p.m.
What do trees do, anyway? Discover how they help us and learn how to identify some common trees in our area. We will make a leaf rubbing book to take home. Meet at the Amphitheater.


Wild Wednesdays

Family programs geared for ages 8+
Get interactive as you explore the "wild" side of the woods during these Wednesday programs. Nature hikes and creative activities will aid your nature discovery while having fun at the same time. All programs are $3/person or $5/family.

Nature’s Recyclers
August 27, 2-3 p.m.
$3/person or $5/family
Dive into the composting experience. Uncover the important role earthworms and arthropods play in the environment. Also, learn how to create a vermi-compost bin to use at your home, and take a chance at winning one during our drawing! Meet at the Cypress Shelter.

Aquatic Adventures
September 17, 2-3:30 p.m.
$4/person or $7/family
Discover the world beneath the water as we use dip nets to go in search of aquatic insects, amphibians, fish and more! Meet at the Cypress Shelter.



Family Programs

Insect Investigation
Saturday, August 23, 11 a.m.-noon
$3/person or $5/family
Buzzing, flying, biting and bugging! Learn about insects that visit your garden, yard, and even your home, every day. Discover those insects that are beneficial and how insects play an important role in the environment. Meet at Amphitheater.

Evening Canoe Float
Friday, September 5, 7-8:30 p.m.
$10/canoe
Join us as we take a short canoe trip on the lake and explore the night life. Previous paddling experience is required. Maximum capacity per boat is two adults and one child. All paddlers must be over the age of 12. Meet below the restroom building.

Big Sweep
Saturday, September 27, 9 a.m.-noon
Help the efforts in keeping Harris Lake clean! Work gloves and trash bags provided.


Try-It Discovery Program for Brownie Troops

Play animal BINGO, inspect earthworms, go leaf hunting and much more while you explore nature from different points of view.

In the course of about two hours, your troop will have the opportunity to earn the "Earth and Sky" try-it and parts of the following try-its: Animals, Watching Wildlife, Plants and Outdoor Adventure; 11 requirements in all.

This is a troop-led program in which all activities are independent of each other, giving your troop a choice in activities. Program kits are reserved and loaned out through the park office on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information please contact the office at 919-387-4342.


Stewardship Days

Park staff relies on dedicated volunteers to help maintain the beauty and safety of Harris Lake County Park for its visitors and wildlife. Call to schedule a volunteer opportunity for an individual or group. An educational component is part of the volunteer experience, so call for more details.
