December 2014: Free Programs!

In December, Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) is offering some programs free of charge! Sign up for one (or more!) of these activities with your family.


 
Food Drive
The Entire Month of December
Join Crowder District Park during the month of December for its annual food drive. All proceeds go to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. Last year the park collected of over 100 pounds of food! Now in our 3rd year, let’s make our largest contribution yet! What to Donate: Nutritious, non-perishable food!  Visit the Food Bank site for details. Crowder District Park is located at 4709 Ten-Ten Road, Apex.

Historic Oak View County Park
Christmas at Oak View Farm: Self-Guided Tour powered by OnCell
December 13–31 during park hours
Bring your cell phone to Historic Oak View County Park and take a FREE audio tour of a special exhibition, Christmas at Oak View Farm! There are five tour stops spread out through two of our historic buildings, the Plank Kitchen and the Main Farmhouse. Each stop focuses on holiday customs, traditions and decorations during a different time period in Oak View's history: Antebellum Era, Civil War, Victorian Era, Great Depression and World War II. No reservations needed. *Please note: Oak View is closed on December 24 and 25. Historic Oak View County Park is located at 4028 Carya Drive, Raleigh.

Lake Crabtree County Park
Winter Tree ID
Saturday, December 13, 1–3 p.m.
Have trouble telling trees apart when they don’t have leaves? We'll teach you at Lake Crabtree County Park! Learn how to identify several common species through the use of twigs, buds, bark and growth habit. Hand lenses and field guides will be provided. Best for ages 7 and up. Preregistration is required. FREE!!! Lake Crabtree is located at 1400 Aviation Parkway, Morrisville.

Harris Lake County Park
Winter Hike
Saturday, December 13, 2–4 p.m.
Shake off those winter doldrums at Harris Lake County Park with a brisk hike along our Peninsula Trail and through our Longleaf Forest. Dress for the weather with sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle. Meet at the Loblolly Shelter. FREE!!! Harris Lake County Park is located at 2112 County Park Drive, New Hill.

Historic Yates Mill County Park
The Spirit of Giving
Monday, December 15, 10:30 a.m.–noon
Get into the spirit of giving at Historic Yates Mill County Park by helping to cut out and assemble warm fleece blankets for children in need. No sewing skills are required! All blankets made during this program will be donated to the Project Linus nonprofit group. By helping out, you'll become a "blanketeer"! For ages 7 & up; FREE!!! Preregistration is required. Historic Yates Mill County Park is located at 4620 Lake Wheeler Road, Raleigh.

American Tobacco Trail
Trail Treks: Nature’s Clean-Up Crew
Thursday, December 18, 2–3 p.m.
It's a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it. Come to The American Tobacco trail to learn about nature's clean-up crew, the scavengers and decomposers, who perform a necessary but often overlooked role in the environment. We'll learn why these creatures are ecologically important and search for them along the Trail. This program is open to all ages and is FREE!!! Meet at the New Hill Parking Area. The American Tobacco Trail is located at 1309 New Hill-Olive Chapel Road, Apex.

Blue Jay Point County Park
Family Wildlife Series: Natural Creations
Saturday, December 27, 2–3:30 p.m.
Have you ever looked at a silhouette of bare tree branches against a winter sky and thought it looked like a work of art? Come practice your winter tree ID skills with Blue Jay County Park staff on a winter ramble, and while we are out, you can take some photos to capture your favorite "work of art." We'll post these photos on Facebook and let folks vote for "best in show" in this fun and friendly amateur photography contest. Who knows, there might even be a simple prize or two! FREE!!!, but preregistration required. Appropriate for ages 5 & up. Blue Jay Point County Park is located at 3200 Pleasant Union Church Road, Raleigh.
