August 2014: Night Programs

In August, Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) is offering programs at night! Sign up for one (or more!) of these evening outdoor activities with your family.

Twilight Hike
Friday, August, 1, 8–9:30 p.m.
Listen for the cricket's chirp, the frogs' chorus and the call of the barred owl as we put our best foot forward on a Twilight Hike. Must be age 5 & up; $3/individual or $5/family. For information, call 919-870-4330. Blue Jay Point County Park is located at 3200 Pleasant Union Church Road, Raleigh.

Historic Yates Mill County Park
Yates by Night: Night Riddles
Friday, August 8, 8–9 p.m.
Join a park naturalist for a walk in the park after dark. No flashlights allowed! Find hidden clues along the way to answer a night time riddle. For ages 8 and up (with an accompanying adult); fee: $5/family or $3/person. Preregistration is required. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Historic Yates Mill County Park is located at 4620 Lake Wheeler Road, Raleigh.

Historic Oak View County Park
A Starlit “View”: Astronomy Program
Saturday, August 9, 8:30–10:30 p.m.
Historic Oak View County Park is partnering with Morehead Planetarium to bring you an evening filled with stories and stargazing. Learn star facts and stories in an introductory program and then, weather permitting, head to the front lawn for telescope observing and identifying stars and constellations. Public event; no registration required. Historic Oak View County Park is located at 4028 Carya Drive, Raleigh.

Harris Lake County Park
Super Full Moon Hike
Sunday, August 10, 7:30–9:30 p.m.
Start off the evening learning what a super moon is with a fun activity. As the Super Full Moon rises in the night sky, we will hike under its light. This program is for all ages and costs $5/family. Preregistration is required.

Crowder District Park
Crowder by Night: Night Lights
Friday, August 15, 7:30–8:30 p.m.
Lights help us see in the dark, but what happens when there is too much light at night? Explore light pollution and how the different types of shades of light affect wildlife. Measure the stars and discover the importance of the moon for sea turtles. Then have fun with glow sticks! The program fee is $3/person or $5/family. Preregistration is required. Crowder District Park is located at 4709 Ten-Ten Road, Apex.

Lake Crabtree County Park
Spider Sniffing
Friday, August 15, 8–10 p.m.
Do you have a nose for nature? Bring it, a flashlight, and your night vision for a walk around the Old Beech Nature Trail. Meet with park staff at dusk to learn what those bumps in the night really are and discover the secret art of “spider-sniffing.” The program fee is $3/person or $5/family. Preregistration is required. Send in a registration form with payment to sign up. Meet at the Waterwise Garden. Lake Crabtree is located at 1400 Aviation Parkway, Morrisville.
