Geminid Night Sky Viewing

with the Raleigh Astronomy Club

Monday, December 14
7 p.m. – Midnight

The Geminids Meteorite Shower is caused by the tail of an extinct comet, 3200 Pharthon, passing through the earth’s atmosphere. It is centered just north of the constellation Gemini. The number of meteors will increase as the night progresses. You won’t need any special equipment to view them – your naked eye is the best. Dress warmly and bring a reclining chair or warm blanket to spread out on a flat spot on the ground facing northeast and look up. There will be telescopes available to look at other objects in the night sky, Raleigh Astronomy Club members to interpret what you are seeing, and hot chocolate to keep you warm (while it lasts!). Call the main park line, 919-870-4330, after 5 p.m. for an event update in case of questionable viewing conditions.

This event is free, no preregistration is required, and all ages are welcome.
