Opportunities Abound!​

Blue Jay Point offers numerous opportunities for children, families and adults at our park. We have many facilities available: playgrounds, open play fields, picnic areas, trails, gardens and an environmental education center with exhibits. The trails and gardens and new Natural Play Area are great places to use to give your child a "Green Hour" a day. A "Green Hour" is a bit of time for unstructured play and interaction with the natural world. Learn more about how to get your child outdoors with the National Wildlife Federation's Green Hour program.

Blue Jay Point also offers special events, programs and activity boxes call "Discovery Boxes." Every year, we host several Special Events that are great opportunities to come out to the park with your family and experience Blue Jay. We also offer environmental education programs and Family Discovery Boxes for children ages 3 & up, as well as programs and workshops for adults. Please see the current Blue Jay Program Directory or click on a program title below for information on upcoming programs. Annual Songbird Celebration
Saturday, April 26, 2014
11 a.m.–3 p.m.

 

Songbird Celebration is an annual event celebrating the return of migratory songbirds and in honor of International Migratory Bird Day. It is a FREE festival for bird lovers of all ages, and a great outing for families, Scouts and other youth groups. Enjoy bird-related activities throughout the park, including games and crafts, preschool story times, bird hikes for adults and kids, learning stations and more.

 

Songbird Celebration is always held on the last Saturday in April, so mark your calendars now for April 26, 2014!

 

  

 Annual Big Sweep

Saturday, October 5, 2013

9 a.m.–noon

(for Lakeside Trash Pick-up)

Join ranks to help clean up the Falls Lake shoreline around Blue Jay Point. All volunteers must be ages 8 and up. Volunteers under age 16 must come with a participating supervisory adult or parent/guardian.
 
ALL Volunteers must bring a completed Wake County Volunteer Service Agreement and Release Form. Bring a water bottle and hat. Sunscreen and your favorite brand of insect repellent is recommended. Closed-toe shoes, such as old sneakers, are a must! Night Owls and Candle Magic (every other year) Saturday, November 22, 2014
6:30–9 p.m.

 

Bring the "night owls" in your family to enjoy the magic of a stroll along our luminary-lined trail as you learn about the late fall seasonal activities of our local owls. Enjoy hot cocoa and a lantern-lit craft project before you go home. FREE and for all ages (baby backpacks are recommended rather than strollers). No dogs, please. Last "stroll" begins at 8:30 p.m. Perfect for Jr. Naturalist families and Scout groups! (No preregistration is needed for this evening event.) We need a few additional adults, high school juniors/seniors or college students to help us with this event. Call 919-870-4330 to find out what you need to do to volunteer!

 

 

  

Winter Open House (every other year)

2–4 p.m.

 

Come out and join the Blue Jay staff as they celebrate another great year of programs! On alternate years, the Winter Open House focuses on different environmental education themes through crafts, interactive displays, hands-on educational activities and presentations. Enjoy refreshments on the covered front porch while you watch winter birds at the feeders. This is a great FREE winter Saturday afternoon outing for families, Scout groups and adults. NC Aquatic WILD

Facilitated by NC Wildlife Resources educator Cecilia King, this 6-hour workshop introduces participants to the free Aquatic WILD K–12 educator guide. The workshop is similar to the N.C. WILD Basic workshop, except there is a focus on aquatics. The N.C. WILD Aquatic workshops are open to all interested educators, including classroom teachers, environmental educators, resource agency staff, park personnel, college students and faculty, and youth leaders. Bring a bag lunch.

This 6-hour workshop counts as a Criteria I workshop in the NC Environmental Education Certification Program.

Adult Workshop. FREE, but preregistration is required.
