About Us

Thank you for visiting Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space. Our mission is to "acquire and maintain a system of natural areas, open spaces, park facilities and historic sites that promote environmental and cultural stewardship as well as provide educational and leisure opportunities for all county citizens."
Since its creation in 1976, Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space has been working to achieve its mission for the citizens of Wake County. This is done in four major areas:
1. Regional Parks – Wake County currently maintains a system of regional parks that provide quality programs and facilities for public use. To learn more about these parks click on the links below.
2. Open Space Preservation – Wake County is currently spearheading a cooperative effort to preserve open space in our area. Part of this effort includes a $15 million bond granted by Wake County voters in November 2000 to purchase open space property.
3. School/Parks – Wake County currently cooperates with the Wake County Board of Education and local municipalities through the Community School/Park Capital Fund for the planning, land acquisition and development of new schools in an effort to provide parks and recreation opportunities at school sites that benefit both the school and community.
4. Historic Preservation – Wake County provides technical assistance for Historic Site Planning and Development and works to participate in partnerships that aim for the preservation of cultural resources and historic properties.
