Wake County Human Services Kicks Off New Era of Service

10/15/2007

Wake County Human Services (WCHS) will take the next step of implementing its innovative Professional Learning Community concept October 15, at 9 a.m., at the McKimmon Conference and Training Center in Raleigh. The event will serve as a kickoff for the formal implementation of WCHS Professional Learning Communities. County Manager David Cooke; Maria Spaulding, the founding director of Wake County Human Services; Human Services Board members and Director Ramon Rojano will attend.

The Professional Learning Community concept, introduced by Human Services Director Ramon Rojano in April, has already engaged more than 560 Human Services employees from a variety of divisions, programs and disciplines, to begin planning to improve agency performance. Each of the 25 WCHS Professional Learning Communities will work as a committee to focus on a particular field, function or action that is of importance for the agency. Staff members have volunteered their time and expertise, in addition to their regular job, to address the key strategies:

  • Implement best practices that increase service capacity and promote better outcomes for clients.
  • Improve Customer Services.
  • Promote a culture of inclusiveness that energizes employees, utilizes their talents and improves morale.
  • Providing opportunities to work with staff from different divisions.
  • Create new opportunities for employees to learn, grow and assume leadership roles.
  • Provide opportunities for professional growth and promotion within WCHS.

Each committee will work systemically to challenge assumptions and barriers to ensure implementation of best practices.
