Knightdale 4-H Club Draws Record Crowd

10/22/2007

The Knightdale High School "Every Sister Help a Sister" 4-H Club drew a crowd of 65 young women to their first meeting on September 13, 2007. The next meeting will be held on October 25, 2007. Founded last winter, the club was designed by students to give them a place to discuss issues that matter to them and learn life skills, particularly those related to leadership development, self-esteem and self-awareness.

The school-based 4-H Club will work to establish relationships between young women of different backgrounds by promoting educational excellence, empowerment, mentorship, accountability and community service. Members of ‘Every Sister Help a Sister’ plan to perform community service, attend educational/social functions and participate in educational workshops, including sessions on financial literacy, adolescent pregnancy, violence and substance abuse prevention. A unique "Accountability Sister System" will encourage members to check on each other’s total well being.

Each year, more than 8,000 young people participate in 4-H clubs in Wake County. 4-H offers clubs, staff-led programs and projects, summer camps, teen programs, leadership experiences, and after-school programs to teach students ages 5 to 19 new skills and help them serve their communities.
