From Field to Food: A Fall Harvest Celebration Sept. 15
9/7/2007
Wake County’s Historic Yates Mill County Park will hold its second annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, September 15, 2007, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Historic Yates Mill County Park is located at 4620 Lake Wheeler Road in Raleigh.
The event will feature demonstrations, contests and activities for the entire family. The most popular activities include wheat straw weaving, corn shuck doll making, cob-throwing contests, children’s storytelling, dance performances and live music. Popcorn and hushpuppies will be given away throughout the event. Visitors to the Mill are also encouraged to compete in the Cornmeal Cook-off Contest and "Corn Crafts" Display.
The 250-year-old mill will be open for half-hour tours and corn-grinding demonstrations conducted by 19th-century costumed interpreters. Volunteers from the nonprofit group Yates Mill Associates will sell Yates Mill stone-ground cornmeal and merchandise. Tours are $5 per adult, $3 for seniors (60+) and students (6-16). Children under six years old are free.
Tommy Edwards and the “Hot Tub of Grits” bluegrass band and Martin and Johnson’s old-time music group will perform. Noah’s Concessions will sell roasted corn and corn dogs.
If you are interested in participating in the Cornmeal Cook-off Contest or "Corn Crafts" Display, visit www.wakegov.com/yatesmill or call the park at 919-856-6675.
Note: Corn-grinding demonstrations may be abbreviated or canceled due to drought conditions in Wake County. Call the park office to confirm at 919-856-6675.
