Volunteers Needed For Big Sweep

10/4/2007

You are invited to join hundreds of Wake County volunteers to clean up 11 watersheds, streams, lakes, rivers, wetlands and high ridges, on Saturday, October 6. The effort is part of the annual North Carolina Big Sweep. All 100 counties in the State and approximately 90 countries worldwide participate in Big Sweep every fall as part of the International Coastal Cleanup.

Volunteers are needed at each of the cleanups across Wake County. Locations include Black Creek in Cary, Lake Crabtree in Morrisville and Falls Lake at Beaver Dam Lake in Raleigh. Additional cleanups are also scheduled on Saturday, October 13 and Saturday, November 3. Visit www.wakegov.com to choose a site, roll up your sleeves, and improve your watershed!

The purpose of Big Sweep is to pick up unsightly litter that poses a threat to clean water, wildlife, and people. Last fall, 437 Wake County volunteers collected 7.03 tons of waste from 46.5 miles of shoreline at 22 Wake County waterways. This includes 11,860 pounds of trash, 1,100 pounds of recyclables, 900 pounds of tires and 200 pounds of TV sets.

North Carolina Big Sweep in Wake County is coordinated by Wake Soil and Water Conservation District within the Department of Environmental Services / Water Quality Division.
