Register of Deeds Launches Electronic Recording of Documents
11/27/2007
On Wednesday, November 28, 2007, the Wake County Register of Deeds office will begin electronically recording, or eRecording, official documents via the Internet, making Wake County one of only two counties in North Carolina to offer the eRecording service.
To introduce the new service to the public, Register of Deeds Laura M. Riddick will host a kickoff event at 10:00 a.m. on November 28 in the Board of Commissioners’ Meeting Room 700 in the Wake County Courthouse, which will feature a demonstration of the technology. Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall, who has worked for years to make electronic recording and electronic notarization of documents a reality, will provide opening remarks at the event.
“We are pleased to offer this service to our citizens,” Riddick said, “And we are confident that eRecording will process documents more efficiently, reduce document delivery time, and save on mailing costs for both our customers and our office. I hope that all documents sent to the County, including deeds and other contracts, can be filed this way within a year.”
Satisfactions -- documents that banks, mortgage companies and attorneys send to record full payment of mortgages and other debt – comprised a quarter of almost 245,000 documents recorded during the past year, and will be the first form of eRecording service offered. Representatives from the State Employees’ Credit Union and the eRecording vendor will demonstrate the official recording of a satisfaction document. The eRecording service involves submitting, receiving and processing documents via the Internet. As a result, documents will be more quickly recorded, indexed and made available to the public.
