Public Meeting Nov. 15 to Kick Off South Wake Landfill Citizens' Committee

11/8/2006

A public meeting to establish the South Wake Landfill Citizens Committee will be held Wednesday, November 15, 2006, beginning at 5:00 p.m., in the auditorium of Holly Springs High School, 5329 Cass Holt Road. The purpose of the committee will be to educate, engage and receive input from citizens who live near the landfill, thereby assisting the County and municipal partners in making developmental and implementation decisions in coordination with the community.

An open forum is planned from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., wherein citizens can view display boards with maps, photographs and other information, and staff will be available to answer questions about the new landfill. A presentation and discussion about the citizens committee will begin at 7:00 p.m., and County staff will be available to answer questions and continue discussions until 9:00 p.m. Citizens will be asked to sign up for committee membership following the presentation.

"Facilitating a Landfill Citizens Committee for Holly Springs is an integral part of the landfill program and adjacent County waste facilities," said Jim Reynolds, director of Solid Waste Management Division. "We’re working with Holly Springs to answer citizens' questions about the site and to get the committee under way."

The committee will be facilitated by an independent consultant along with staff in the County Solid Waste Management Division, who have been developing the initiative for some time.

The Committee will consist of members of the residential and business community in the vicinity of the South Wake Landfill, and is being formed under the sponsorship of the Solid Waste Management Division. Materials prepared for the public meeting can be viewed online at www.wakegov.com/recycling/southwake/.
