Task Force to Hear Report July 20 on Sewage Spill, Prioritize Stormwater Issues
7/19/2006
The Wake County Stormwater Management Task Force will hear a report on the water quality sampling results following the June 23rd sewage spill in Cary at its regular monthly meeting Thursday, July 20, from 6-8 p.m., at the Wake County Office Building, 337 S. Salisbury St. in downtown Raleigh. The public is welcome to attend.
The sewage spill resulted from a force main break during a heavy rain event at the Swift Creek Sewer Pump Station. Additionally County staff will present results from the sampling of private residential wells in the unincorporated areas surrounding the spill. The tests were conducted to determine if water quality standards were exceeded for fecal coliform, dissolved oxygen and E. Coli as a result of the spill.
In prior meetings, the task force studied structural and nuisance flooding, floodplain development, water quality and sedimentation and erosion control to develop an understanding of existing and future stormwater issues impacting Wake County. The task force will begin at Thursday’s meeting the process of prioritizing stormwater issues and the tools and strategies that would be most effective in addressing those issues.
The task force consists of representatives from the County and each of the 12 municipal governments within Wake County. Federal and state water quality regulations mandate that Wake County and most local communities protect streams, lakes and other water resources from runoff impacts.
