'Mutt Strut' Sept. 9 to Raise Money for Spay/Neuter Assistance

8/30/2006

Wake County’s 9th Annual "Mutt Strut" Dog Walk Festival will be Saturday, September 9, from 8 a.m. to noon, at Historic Oak View County Park (Carya Drive, off Poole Road, in Raleigh). Fundraising goals this year are to educate people about the pet overpopulation problem in Wake County and to assist in funding spay/neuter services for low-income residents.

The event was canceled last year because staff members organizing the event were called to duty at the evacuation center for victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Registration is at 8 a.m., and a standard one-mile walking course is offered to participants to complete at their leisure. The event will include a N.C. Department of Corrections Fugitive Recovery demonstration, pet and owner relay races, and Top Dog Academy agility demonstration. A dog wash and rabies and microchip clinics will be offered, exhibits and vendors will be on site, and tickets will be sold throughout the day for a raffle at noon. Prizes include:

  • 2 Carolina Hurricanes hockey tickets
  • 4 N.C. State University basketball tickets
  • 4 tickets to Disney on Ice
  • $100 Angus Barn gift certificate
  • And more

If you have questions about this event, or to register for the Mutt Strut dog walk, go to www.wakegov.com/pets/dogwalk or call 212-PETS. Here are some other ways people can help homeless and abandoned pets in Wake County:

  • Cash donations may be sent to the attention of Wake Animal Center Manager Nancy Clemmons at 820 Beacon Lake Road, Raleigh, NC 27610.
  • Vendors/exhibitors are welcome for a $25 donation which includes a table, two chairs, a festival T-shirt and a goody bag in appreciation.
  • Specific items needed for in-kind donations are gift certificates, door-prize items, dog and cat food, cat litter, paper towels and bleach.
