6/14/2006

Wake County officials, in collaboration with Wake County Public Schools, will open an emergency shelter at Enloe High School, 128 Clarendon Crescent (East Campus), Raleigh, at 4:30 p.m. for individuals impacted by today’s flooding and heavy rains.

The shelter will be open until Thursday morning. Anyone who needs to use the shelter should follow these American Red Cross guidelines and bring:

  • identification and important personal documents
  • toiletries (toothbrush and toothpaste, etc.) and any needed medications
  • feeding formula and diapers for infants
  • a change of clothing
  • books, games and simple toys for children.

Cots, blankets and pillows will be provided. Individuals with serious medical needs should call the Wake County Emergency Operations Center at 856-7044 prior to going to the shelter.

The Wake County Emergency Operations Center was activated around noon today in response to flooding from the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto. The EOC is coordinating emergency response and rescue efforts in the field and monitoring the ongoing situation. Rain has begun to subside, but localized flooding has led to some evacuations and road closings.

Standing water on roadways is a hazard in many locations throughout the County. Numerous homes and vehicles have been trapped by waters as streams continue to rise, and officials have conducted multiple water rescues. Emergency officials urge citizens to stay indoors, if possible, and never to drive into moving water. Call 9-1-1 if you are experiencing an emergency.

County officials will continue to monitor conditions. Stay tuned to radio and TV for any future updates or call the Wake County Emergency Operations Center at 856-7044.
