8/1/2006
The Wake County Sheriff's Office is sponsoring a 1.5-mile dog walk to benefit Special Olympics on Saturday, August 12, at Historic Oak View County Park, 4028 Carya Drive, off Poole Road, in Raleigh. Registration begins at 9 a.m. the day of the event.
Registration fee is $25 per dog, which includes a Special Olympic hat and T-shirt for the owner and a bandana for the dog. Participants are encouraged to gather sponsorships beyond the registration fee. In addition to the dog walk, the event will include dog contests, dog demonstrations, multiple vendors and other activities for the whole family. There will be a microchip clinic and Canine Good Citizenship evaluations.
The 2006 Dog Walk will benefit the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which hopes to raise $1.2 million this year for Special Olympics North Carolina. In addition to the Dog Walk, officers will raise funds through T-shirt, baseball cap and car magnet sales, individual and corporate donations, and special events including golf tournaments, building sits and polar plunges.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is an international event to raise money for Special Olympics, which provides year-around sports training and competition for more than one million children and adults who have intellectual disabilities. Nearly 37,000 athletes participate in Special Olympics in North Carolina, making it the largest Special Olympics program in North America, in terms of athlete participation.
