Human Services Offers Low-Income Energy Assistance

Individuals who need help paying their heating bills this winter may apply for assistance from the North Carolina Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP). LIEAP gives families a one-time cash payment to help pay their heating bills. Applications for LIEAP will be taken for a limited time period, November 6 through November 17. Eligible households will receive a check in the mail early in February.
Wake County Human Services will be taking applications at the following locations Monday, November 6, through Friday, November 17:
Human Services Swinburne Building
220 Swinburne Street, Raleigh,
8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Southern Regional Center (SRC)
130 N. Judd Parkway NE, Fuquay-Varina,
8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Eastern Regional Center (ERC)
1002 Dogwood Drive, Zebulon,
8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
To be eligible for LIEAP, families must meet all of the following criteria:
- Household must meet an income test of 110 percent of poverty;
- Household must be responsible for heating bills;
- Household assets can not exceed $2,200; and
- Household must include a U.S. citizen or an eligible alien.
For individuals needing emergency assistance with their winter heating bill, the Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) provides emergency financial assistance to help households that are in a heating crisis. To qualify, families must have income at or below 150 percent of the poverty level. Appointments for CIP begin November 20 by calling 212-7000 and asking for energy assistance programs.
