Wake County Animal Care, Control and Adoption Center is partnering with the VCA Triangle Tower Animal Hospital (VCA) to cosponsor a rabies clinic on Saturday, October 28, 2006. The Clinic will be at the VCA, 1300 Corporation Parkway in Raleigh, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Rabies shots are $5.00 per animal.

The Wake County Animal Control Ordinance requires pet owners to vaccinate their animals against rabies by 4 months of age or older. Dogs must be held securely on a leash at the clinic, and cats must be contained in a cat carrier or box.

"Recent cases of rabid animals biting humans should motivate citizens to take advantage of these affordable and convenient clincis," said Wake Environmental Health & Safety Director Andre Pierce, "This is our second clinic this year, and we have 5 more planned before June 2007."

Rabies is a disease caused by a virus that can infect all mammals, including humans. It is transmitted through contact with the saliva or nervous tissue of an infectious animal - - usually through a bite. If an exposed person or animal isn't treated quickly enough rabies can even result in death.

Because it can be fatal, rabies should be considered extremely dangerous. Prevention is the key. Stay away from animals that appear sick or act oddly, and avoid contact with strange animals and wildlife. For more information about rabies or other animal care and control issues call 212-PETS.
