8/22/2006

West Regional Library, 4000 Louis Stephens Drive in Cary, will open its doors Saturday, September 16, immediately following an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. To celebrate the occasion, the library will host a day of fun-filled events and performances for all ages that start at 10:30 a.m. and run until 5 p.m.

Opening-day activities will begin with music from the Cary Town Band and the official ribbon-cutting ceremony with county, town and library officials. Afterward, everyone can enjoy musical performances, food, arts and crafts, dancers, and storytelling – all with an international flavor.

Area balloon artist Jeff Jones will amaze children and parents alike with his repertoire of inflatable jungle creatures immediately following the official ribbon-cutting ceremony. Also in the morning, members of the Suzuki Fiddlers will play in the library entrance, followed by bluegrass group the Green Hope Grass, in the courtyard starting at 12:30 p.m.

The afternoon’s events feature special storytimes, including storyteller Renee Gibbs. Other groups performing include: the Apex Honors Orchestra, the Danny Tighe School of Irish Dance and Indian dancer Vaishnavi Rao. The day’s activities wind down with music from Latin music band Saludos Compay, starting at 3:00 p.m.

Located near the intersections of Highway 55 and Morrisville Carpenter Road, the 30,000-square-foot public library will be the second largest in the county. West Regional Library will provide much-needed services to the rapidly expanding western half of Wake County by serving the Cary, Morrisville and Apex communities.

The library has a unique U-shaped design, with Youth Services in one wing and Adult Services in the other. Library visitors enter via a courtyard into the central "marketplace" with the newest books, comfortable seating and easy access to a wide variety of information services.

Part of the Carpenter Village development, West Regional Library will be a neighborhood-friendly place, with 70 public computers, WiFi Internet access, conference room, six service desks, a drive-up book drop, study rooms, and a multipurpose room for kids’ and adults’ events. The library is situated with a view to a community lake. There are also many nearby walking and biking trails.
