Wake County Public Libraries Celebrate Record-Breaking Booksale, 12/14/2006
Wake County Public Libraries’ November booksale set new records. Held in the former Super Kmart on New Bern Avenue, the sale was Wake County’s largest ever, offering more than 500,000 books to the public in an expanded facility with extended hours and improved parking. When the dust cleared, fewer than 6,900 books remained.

Fire Marshal Urges Residents to Use Caution When Frying Turkeys, 11/21/2006
Wake County Fire Marshal Ray Echevarria is urging residents to be extremely careful this Thanksgiving if they are going to use turkey fryers. The recent popularity of these deep fat fryers has lead to an increase of fires caused by their use. Underwriters Laboratories has refused to certify and place their UL mark on these products because of the fire risks associated with these fryers.

Human Services Offers Low-Income Energy Assistance, 11/2/2006
Individuals who need help paying their heating bills this winter may apply for assistance from the North Carolina Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP). LIEAP gives families a one-time cash payment to help pay their heating bills. Applications for LIEAP will be taken for a limited time period, November 6 through November 17. Eligible households will receive a check in the mail early in February.

Wake County Human Services will kick off its flu shot clinics Saturday, November 4, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. This special Saturday offering will be held in Clinic E of Human Services-Sunnybrook, 10 Sunnybrook Road (next to WakeMed), Raleigh. No appointment is needed.

Up to $10,000 Available for Innovative Business Recycling Programs, 10/30/2006
Wake County Solid Waste Management is accepting applications for commercial waste reduction grants, offering up to $10,000 for innovative business waste reduction projects. Organizations looking to increase their involvement in waste reduction and recycling efforts are encouraged to apply, and applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2006.

County Offers Rabies Vaccinations for $5.00 on Oct. 28, 10/18/2006
Wake County Animal Care, Control and Adoption Center is partnering with the VCA Triangle Tower Animal Hospital (VCA) to cosponsor a rabies clinic on Saturday, October 28, 2006. The Clinic will be at the VCA, 1300 Corporation Parkway in Raleigh, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Rabies shots are $5.00 per animal.

Water samples have tested negative today for E.Coli contamination in the Cary public water supply system, and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources has lifted the boil water order for the Town of Cary. Commercial kitchens and regulated facilities, including restaurants, that have been closed may reopen for business immediately. Two paramedics vacationing together weren't "off-duty" when Ben Blalock collapsed in a fast-food restaurant on Saturday, July 29, in Shallote, N.C. Larry Barham and Glenn Barham - brothers with 53 years of combined service for Wake County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) - took immediate action to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and send family members to call 911.

Wake County Courthouse To Open On Regular Schedule Monday At 7 A.M., 08/07/2006
Around 9:30 p.m. Friday, a water leak affected 45,000 square feet on the first and second floors of the courthouse and part of the underground parking area. The Wake County Courthouse will open on its regular schedule Monday, August 7, at 7 a.m. Two of the building's four elevators will not be in service until Tuesday.

Wake Health Officials Issue Rabies Notice For North Raleigh Residents, 08/04/2006
Two recent confirmed rabies cases in feral cats found in the Spring Forest Road and Capital Boulevard vicinity of North Raleigh have prompted local health officials to issue a rabies notice for residents and visitors. A feral cat is one that is wild or untamed. Anyone in the area who has been bitten or scratched by an unfamiliar animal since early July should call Wake County's Community Health Communicable Disease section at (919) 250-4462 .

The Wake County Sheriff's Office is sponsoring a 1.5-mile dog walk to benefit Special Olympics on Saturday, August 12, at Historic Oak View County Park, 4028 Carya Drive, off Poole Road, in Raleigh. Registration begins at 9 a.m. the day of the event.

Cool for Wake Program Provides Heat Relief; Wake EMS Offers Heat Stress Tips, 07/18/2006
Low-income individuals who are unable to cool their homes during extreme heat conditions may qualify for Wake County's Cool for Wake program. Through September 1, 2006, Cool for Wake will provide free fans to qualified individuals.

Wake County Closes Lakes Due to High Bacteria Levels, 07/14/2006
Wake County has closed several recreational lakes to swimming due to elevated levels of bacteria, based on EPA standards. As part of the County's Recreational Water Quality program, routine testing for two types of bacteria -- Enterococci and E coli -- indicates when there may be elevated levels of other types of bacteria in recreational lakes, as well. When these levels exceed the standard, the area is closed to "primary contact recreation," which is swimming or any activity where your head may go underwater. The County samples the lakes weekly each summer.

Wake Extends Deadline on Community Needs Survey to July 31, 07/13/2006
Wake County is extending its deadline for citizens to complete the Community Needs Assessment Survey to July 31. The County, through its Human Services department, is using targeted focus groups and a survey to gain as much input from the public as possible about their economic, health, safety and quality of life concerns.

Storm-related repairs are under way at Historic Yates Mill County Park, and the mill and its yard are expected to reopen to the public on the third weekend of July, at which time corn grinding will be demonstrated.

Wake Fire/Rescue Division Lists Fireworks Safety Tips, Scheduled Displays, 06/30/2006
Every year, fireworks or resulting fires injure more than 11,000 people. More than half of these injuries occur during the first week of July. Summertime should be a time to have fun. Cameron Village Library to Host Elizabeth I Exhibit June 30-August 11, 06/22/2006
Cameron Village Regional Library is one of only 40 libraries in the United States selected to host "Elizabeth I: Ruler and Legend," a national traveling exhibit that focuses on the brilliant monarch who ruled England from 1558 until 1603. The exhibit opens with a special celebration Friday, June 30, at 6 p.m., and will be available for viewing through August 11.

Historic Yates Mill, Other County Parks Hit Hard by Storms, 06/15/2006
Rough weather has taken its toll on Wake County Parks in the past week. On Wednesday, Tropical Depression Alberto dumped more than seven inches of rain on the County, resulting in damage to the mill and mill yard area at Historic Yates Mill County Park and flooding at Lake Crabtree County Park. Cleanup was already under way at Harris Lake County Park from the effects of weekend thunderstorms.

Emergency Shelter at Enloe Now Closed, 06/15/2006
Wake County officials have now closed the emergency shelter at Enloe High School, 128 Clarendon Court in Raleigh, after serving nearly 60 people displaced as a result of Wednesday’s flooding from the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto. Overnight, 22 individuals stayed at the shelter.

Public Meeting June 21 in Morrisville to Present PCB Removal Action Plan, 06/14/2006
A public meeting will be held Wednesday, June 21, from 7-9 p.m., to present the Removal Action Plan to be conducted at the Ward Transformer facility. The meeting will take place at the Morrisville Commerce Building, 260 Town Hall Drive.

County to Open Emergency Shelter at Enloe High School Wednesday, June 14, at 4:30 p.m., 06/14/2006
Wake County officials, in collaboration with Wake County Public Schools, will open an emergency shelter at Enloe High School, 128 Clarendon Crescent (East Campus), Raleigh, at 4:30 p.m. for individuals impacted by today’s flooding and heavy rains.

Harris Lake County Park Closed Beginning Monday, June 12, for Storm Damage, 06/12/2006
Harris Lake County Park sustained damage from heavy thunderstorms overnight and will be closed to the public beginning Monday, June 12.

Wake Commissioners Approve New South Wake Landfill, 06/05/2006
Commissioners voted today in favor of a new in-county landfill to provide solid waste disposal to Wake County residents for 25 years. This includes a new long-term Interlocal Agreement (ILA) with municipalities and a Landfill Services contract with Waste Industries, Inc., for the construction and operation of the landfill.

Wake Animal Center Implementing Control Measures to Limit Spread of Canine Respiratory Illness, 05/18/2006
Wake County Environmental Services is working with N.C. State University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and the N. C. Department of Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology (EOE) to develop and implement control measures to limit the spread of a contagious upper respiratory infection present in dogs at the County's Animal Care, Control and Adoption Center. An increase in the number of dogs with runny nose and cough was observed in November 2005. Sick dogs are being treated with antibiotics and are recovering, but medicine and deep cleaning did not stop the illness from spreading between dogs in the facility.

Wake Extends Deadline to May 15 for Katrina Victims to Apply for Funds, 05/05/2006
Wake County Human Services (WCHS) has extended its deadline to receive applications from Hurricane Katrina evacuees for the N.C. Helping Neighbors Fund. In late February, the state distributed more than $274,000 from the fund to 27 North Carolina counties where Katrina evacuees are residing. Wake received $47,471.

Public Comment Requested May 1-15 for Solid Waste Plan, 05/02/2006
The Wake County Ten-Year Solid Waste Management Plan 2006 Update addresses several key solid waste issues that will have a large impact on Wake County residents. These issues include the possible construction of the South Wake Landfill and closing of the North Wake Landfill in the near future, the continued effort to divert materials for recycling by making solid waste management and recycling collection services available to all solid waste generators and the continued effort to address illegal dumping and litter in Wake County.

Wake to Display 20 New Fire Trucks April 27 at RBC Center, 04/24/2006
Wake County Public Safety will celebrate the collaborative purchase of 20 new fire trucks at the RBC Center parking lot Thursday, April 27, 2006, from 10 a.m. to noon. The Wake County Board of Commissioners, Wake County Fire Commission and Wake County Fire Commission’s Apparatus Committee partnered to purchase the new trucks at an estimated savings of $600,000 to County taxpayers.

The National Animal Control Association (NACA) has named Nancy Clemmons, manager of the Wake County Animal Care, Control and Adoption Center, the 2006 Outstanding Animal Control Employee of the Year, from among 15 nominees across the U.S. The award will be presented at the NACA annual training conference in Oklahoma City in May.

Wake Officials to Test Wake Tech Students for Possible TB Exposure, 03/23/2006
Wake County Human Services officials confirmed today that approximately 100 Wake Technical Community College Health Science campus students and teachers may have come in contact with an individual confirmed to have tuberculosis (TB). In a letter to students and staff, Wake County Community Health Director Gibbie Harris alerted individuals of the potential exposure and the need to be tested for TB.

North Carolina General Statute 163-230.2 states that a written request for an absentee ballot by mail is valid only if it is written entirely by the requester personally, or is on a form generated by the county board of elections and signed by the requester.

Wake County’s City-County Bureau of Identification (CCBI) has tapped into a new technology that should greatly assist law enforcement agencies in Wake County. The agency has recently received the Spex Forensic Printquest AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System), which provides a database for full finger and palm-print impressions taken at the time of an individual’s arrest.

Recycle Telephone Books at 21 Locations Around County, 02/15/2006
New telephone books from six different companies are arriving at businesses and on doorsteps just as Wake County Solid Waste Management kicks off its 2006 Telephone Book Recycling Program. Wake County Animal Center to Host Spay Day Event Feb. 28, 01/18/2006
The Wake County Animal Care, Control and Adoption Center will offer low-cost spay/neuter surgeries at its Raleigh facility Tuesday, February 28, as part of Spay Day USA. The Center will also provide free spay/neuter surgeries to pets of low-income individuals who otherwise would forgo having their animals altered, due to the financial burden. Local mobile veterinary practices will provide spay and neuter surgeries for pets of Wake County residents by APPOINTMENT ONLY. Appointments must be made prior to February 14 by calling 250-1244. North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine will spay and neuter shelter animals.
