For the past week, officers from the Cary Police Department, the Raleigh Police Department, and the Wake County Sheriff's Office have learned innovative approaches to mentally ill crisis events.

'Helpful Hands, Healing Hearts' to Aid 4-H Families Impacted by Hurricane Katrina, 09/28/2005
Wake County 4-H youth and families will be collecting supplies and assembling supply kits at Historic Oak View County Park, Saturday, October 1, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., during Oak View's Heritage Day Featuring Youth Fair Day celebration. The kits will go to support fellow 4-H'ers in the Gulf Coast region devastated by Hurricane Katrina. This effort, "Helpful Hands, Healing Hearts," is a joint effort of the North Carolina 4-H Youth Development Program, the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service Foundation and the 4-H Development Fund.

Residents Can Wrap Up Season by Recycling Holiday Waste Dec. 27-Jan. 14, 12/21/2005
Wake County residents can recycle holiday waste for over two weeks after Christmas during the Solid Waste Division’s 12th annual “Holiday Wrap-Up” event. Items such as wrapping paper, trees, gift boxes and greeting cards can be dropped off for recycling at five Convenience Centers across the County beginning December 27 through January 14.

Animal Center Extends Pre-Holiday Hours, 12/20/2005
The Wake County Animal Care, Control and Adoption Center, 820 Beacon Lake Drive in Raleigh, will extend daily business hours December 19-22 to better serve customers wishing to adopt homeless pets and purchase gift certificates or gift baskets for the holidays.

Gang Awareness Seminar to Be Held Dec. 17 in Wendell, 12/09/2005
A gang awareness workshop will be held Saturday, December 17, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the J.M.I. Non-Denominational Worship Center, 1100 Eagle Rock Road, Wendell.  During the workshop, entitled “It’s Your Choice!” participants will learn more about what gangs are, protecting children from gangs and strengthening the community.

The fifth and final public meeting to get input from citizens on how best to use property surrounding the Wake County-owned North Wake Landfill after it closes is scheduled for Tuesday, December 6, at 7 p.m. at Durant Road Middle School Auditorium, 10401 Durant Road in Raleigh.

Cameron Village Regional Library to Close Dec. 3, 12/01/2005
At 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 3, the Cameron Village Regional Library will close its temporary location at 410 Oberlin Road. The library staff will then begin preparations for the move back into the permanent library location at 1930 Clark Ave.

'White Flag' Night Called for Emergency Shelter from Cold, 11/18/2005
Agencies providing shelter for homeless individuals have activated the "White Flag" (WF) initiative for winter 2005 this week based on the cold-weather evening forecast over the next few days. In extremely cold conditions, White Flag sites provide shelter beyond their regular capacity.

$40,000 Available for Reducing Waste, Increasing Recycling, 11/15/2005
Wake County Solid Waste Management is seeking grant applications for projects that increase business involvement in waste prevention efforts, decrease the amount of waste sent to landfills and/or encourage the development, marketing and use of recycled products.

Wake County Human Services Offers Low-Income Energy Assistance, 11/02/2005
Households who need help paying their heating bills this winter may apply for assistance from the North Carolina Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP). LIEAP gives families a one-time cash payment to help pay their heating bills. Applications for LIEAP will be taken for a limited time period, November 7 through November 18. Eligible households will receive a check in the mail in early February.

The first of three community sessions on preventing gangs in Wake County will be held Saturday, October 22, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Dubois Center, 518 North Franklin St., Wake Forest.  Entitled “Community Forum on Gangs,” the roundtable discussions are co-sponsored by Wake County Human Services and the Wake County Gang Prevention Partnership.

Hutchinson Named Wake County Volunteer of the Year, 10/09/2005
Sig Hutchinson, chair of the Wake County Open Space Advisory Committee and a longtime advocate for land preservation in Wake County and throughout North Carolina, has been named the 2005 Wake County Volunteer of the Year. Wake Reads Together 2006: Let the Voting Begin!, 10/05/2005
For the fourth consecutive year, Wake County Public Libraries is sponsoring Wake Reads Together. Area residents are being asked to choose the book that all of Wake County will be reading this winter by voting for one of five nominated titles. The election process occurs between October 10 and October 31 in all public libraries as well as online, and the winner will be announced in January 2006.

Pink Ribbons Serve As Checkup Reminders, 09/29/2005
Approximately 6,300 North Carolina women this year – 420 in Wake County alone – will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Some of those deaths might have been avoided if the breast cancer had been found early. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the United States.

Wake Emergency Responders Receive Medical Patients, Evacuees from Texas, 09/23/2005
Wake County Emergency Management, along with state and federal emergency responders, received almost 100 medical patients and evacuees from the Beaumont, Texas, area this morning at the National Guard facility at Raleigh-Durham (RDU) International Airport. All have now been hospitalized or transported to the Hurricane Disaster Victims Center in west Raleigh, where hotels and other lodging were secured for them.

Pennica Named New Director Of CCBI, 08/10/2005
Salvatore “Sam” Pennica, Chief of Detectives for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division, has been named director of the City-County Bureau of Identification (CCBI). Wake County Manager David Cooke, Raleigh City Manager Russell Allen, and Wake County District Attorney Colon Willoughby announced the appointment today.

A random survey of kindergarteners in Wake County Public Schools indicates that 31 percent are at-risk of being overweight. Wake County Human Services randomly reviewed 2,131 required physicals for the county's 9,142 five-year-olds, who started school in 2004-05, to calculate body mass index (BMI).

County, Raleigh, Partners Launch 10-Year Action Plan to End Homelessness, 02/24/2005
Local officials today launched a 10-year plan that pledges to effectively end homelessness in Raleigh and Wake County by the year 2015. At a news conference today, Congressman Brad Miller presented a check for a $2.69-million federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant to support people who are homeless. The grant will strengthen Wake County efforts to provide transitional and permanent housing, rental subsidies and support services for this population.

Extended Telephone Book Recycling Program Begins, 01/24/2005
New telephone books are arriving on doorsteps just in time for Wake County to kick off its 14th Annual Telephone Book Recycling Program on Monday, January 24. This year's program will offer 25 locations for residents and businesses to recycle their telephone books; 10 of the sites will operate for a four-month period, and 15 of the sites will operate for two months.

On Monday, January 24, Wake County Human Services will give free flu shots on a first-come, first-serve basis to anyone who wishes to receive one. Students to Get a Taste of Space at Eva Perry Library, 01/19/2005
