Wake County Commissioner Kenn Gardner has been elevated to the leadership team of the National Association of Counties (NACo) as vice chairman of the Land Use Subcommittee of the Environment, Energy and Land Use Steering Committee. He also serves as a member of the Watershed Management Advisory Committee.

The Environment, Energy and Land Use Steering Committee deals with all matters pertaining to air, water, and noise pollution control; solid and hazardous waste management and disposal; the preservation and proper usage of water resources; energy; and the use of land resources, including comprehensive planning, coastal zone management, growth management, energy facilities sitting, and recreation.

Gardner, who has served as chairman of the Wake County Watershed Task Force, said, "It is an honor to serve at the national level, and as we have recently seen, Wake County is impacted by policies and events that happen across the nation."

Gardner presented at the NACo Annual Conference in July on Wake County's stormwater and land use initiatives, noting that, "Part of being a national leader is willing to share our successes with other communities."

"Kenn will be a strong advocate for counties on Capitol Hill," said NACo Executive Director Larry Naake.

The National Association of Counties provides legislative, research, technical and public affairs assistance to county governments. Created in 1935, NACo continues to ensure that the nation's 3,066 counties are heard and understood in the White House and Congress.
