Having undergone complete renovation and updates, the A.A. Thompson Center, 567 E. Hargett St., will hold an open house today at 12:30 p.m. Wake County Commissioners’ Vice Chair Tony Gurley and Ann Akland with the Wake County Chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill will be among the local officials in attendance.
The A.A. Thompson Center provides a wide range of mental health services to adults and their families in Wake County. The Center also houses Project Direct, an important diabetes prevention outreach program. Wake County Human Services operates the A.A. Thompson Center, which had fallen into a state of deterioration prior to the renovation. The renewal will add years to its service and viability as a sound County facility.
Named for a former Raleigh mayor and successful businessman, A.A. Thompson, the building has a long history of service to Wake County. It was built in 1922 and spent its first 50 years as an elementary school before housing Wake County Human Services programs in the 1980s. In addition to Human Services, Wake Opportunities also operated its Head Start and other programs for economically disadvantaged families at the Center.
