Wake County Commissioners Host Volunteer Celebration Sunday at Five County Stadium

10/5/2005

The Wake County Board of Commissioners will host its inaugural Volunteer of the Year Celebration Sunday, October 9, from 3-7 p.m., at Five County Stadium in Zebulon. Approximately 800 people – Wake County volunteers and their immediate family members – are expected to be on hand for the event. News anchor Bill Gaines of NBC-17 will serve as master of ceremonies.

The informal theme for the event is "You're an All-Star," coinciding with the celebration's venue at the home of the Carolina Mudcats minor league baseball team. Volunteers and their immediate family members will be honored for their hard work and dedication to Wake County with a celebration of music, food and fun. Activities include the Breeze Band, dancing, a speed pitch machine, a fire truck exhibit, inflatables for kids and more!

The "Volunteer of the Year" awards ceremony will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with Gaines presenting certificates and gifts to the 40 Commissioners' Volunteer Awards nominees. Special recognition will also be given for Governor's Volunteer Awards winners. The ceremony will conclude with the announcement of the 2005 Wake County Volunteer of the Year.

In addition to serving as weeknight anchor of NBC-17 News, Gaines is an active volunteer in the Triangle. He sits on the Board of Directors for the March of Dimes, is a Board member for the Spencer Foundation for Spinal Cord Research and Development at Duke University, and sits on the Public Relations Committee for the Make A Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina.

The Wake County Board of Commissioners Volunteer Steering Committee is co-chaired by Commissioners' Vice Chair Tony Gurley and Commissioner Betty Lou Ward.
