Board Elects Commissioner Tony Gurley as Chair; Harold Webb to Serve as Vice Chair

The Wake County Board of Commissioners on Monday elected Tony Gurley as its new chair and Harold Webb as vice chair, effective immediately, for a one-year term. The chair presides over Board meetings and represents the County in an official capacity at community, business and other functions.

In assuming his leadership post, Gurley thanked his fellow commissioners individually and pledged to work diligently on behalf of both the Board and the citizens of Wake County. He expressed confidence that Wake County "will continue to be the best place in America to live, work, play and learn."

"But to remain the best, we do have major challenges to address," Gurley said. "Our biggest challenge is to meet the growing requirements for construction capital and operating funds for the Wake County Public School System."

Gurley pledged his work and the work of the Board of Commissioners in addressing the funding issue and presenting to voters in November 2006 a bond for school construction.

Commissioner Gurley joined the Board in December 2002. He has been vice chair for the past year and succeeds Joe Bryan as chair. He has served as chair of the Board’s Growth, Land Use and Environment Committee and has served on its Human and Community Services Committee. He has also represented the County on the Criminal Justice Partnership Advisory Committee, Human Services Board and the Raleigh-Wake Interlocal Committee.

Commissioner Webb was appointed to the Board in February 2003 to fill a vacant seat and was elected to a four-year term that began in December 2004. He chairs the Commissioners’ Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee and serves on the Growth, Land Use and Environment and the Human and Community Services committees. He also represents the County on the Capital Area Workforce Development Board, Fire Commission, Human Services Board, Juvenile Crime Prevention Council and Transportation Advisory Committee.
