Renters and First-Time Homebuyers Housing Fair Set for May 21
5/12/2005
Individuals searching for affordable housing options should attend the Renters and First-Time Homebuyers Fair Saturday, May 21, at the Kerr-Scott Building at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wake County’s Supportive Housing Program is hosting the free, public event.
Participants can become prepared to rent, restore credit or learn how to purchase a home. Information will be available on down-payment assistance programs, mortgage loans, rental applications, credit counseling, city and county housing programs and affordable homes available in Wake County. In addition, teachers, firefighters and law-enforcement officers can learn about special financing that’s available to them. Housing education workshops will be offered in English and Spanish.
"We encourage anyone looking for affordable rental housing or who is interested in buying a home to attend the fair," said Melvinna McKenzie, project coordinator with Wake County Human Services’ Supportive Housing program. "This is an excellent opportunity to explore your options and to understand the process of buying a home and how to effectively manage your credit."
This year’s fair will also showcase the 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness, spearheaded by Wake County, the City of Raleigh, Wake Continuum of Care, Triangle United Way and other community partners. Wake County Board of Commissioners’ Vice Chair Tony Gurley will speak at the fair’s opening at 10 a.m. Congressman Bob Etheridge will speak at noon, and Wake County Commissioner Herb Council will also attend.
There are four categories of sponsors for this year’s fair. Platinum sponsors are Anderson Homes, QuePasa and Keller Williams Realty. Gold sponsors are BB&T, Wachovia and Community Management Corporation. Your Home Superstore is a silver sponsor, and bronze sponsors are DHIC Inc./Community, Evergreen Construction, First Citizens Bank and Self-Help Credit Union.
